Mayweather vs. Ortiz: Victor Ortiz's Ignorance Doesn't Justify Rematch

Adam WellsSep 20, 2011

As soon as Floyd Mayweather used a perceived cheap shot to knockout Victor Ortiz, there were calls from fans, analysts and Ortiz for an immediate rematch. The only problem is there would be no reason for Mayweather to take a rematch.

If you saw the fight, or at least the highlights of it, you know that Mayweather was dominating the fight for all four rounds. Ortiz’s only offense came late in the fourth round before all the controversy happened.

Mayweather was peppering Ortiz’s face with punches all fight long, and it was just a matter of time before he knocked Ortiz out. And even if he wasn’t able to knock him out, at the very least he would have earned a unanimous decision victory because Ortiz was on his last legs in the fourth round.

The only reason to do a rematch is if the fight was so close that the actual winner was in doubt and there would be just as much money available, if not more in a rematch.

But since Ortiz put forth such a lackluster performance, and Mayweather was clearly the superior fighter, there is no desire to see these two men fight again.

It is only natural that Ortiz would want a rematch. He bombed in the biggest fight of his career, got caught with his hands down when the referee restarted the fight after he used an illegal head-butt to try and gain an advantage, and is crying foul to anyone that sticks a microphone in his face because he knows he stunk up the joint.

Mayweather does not have to prove anything to anyone. He was in complete control of the fight from the opening bell, showing great power in his strikes and that patented speed that has made him so lethal for 15 years.

His knockout was perfectly legal, despite what anyone might think, and he needs to move on to his next challenge.

Ortiz needs Mayweather to remain relevant, but the same is not true of Mayweather, who earned nearly $25 million for the fight and will make even more when the buy rate comes in.

This fight was Ortiz’s chance to become a mainstream star. All that he had to do was fight the way he did against Andre Berto earlier this year, and he was not able to do it.

He was over matched and outclassed, which means he will have to stop whining about the end of this fight and work on earning another title shot.
