English Premier League Power Rankings: Week 5
This weekend in the Premier League was definitely one full of surprises.
All three promoted clubs gained wins, and a struggling Blackburn club benefited from two own goals by Arsenal to win a seven-goal shootout.
Goals came a-plenty for those who scored them as Tottenham, Sunderland and Blackburn netted four goals while four teams were able put three goals in the net.
The dominance of Manchester clubs was halted a bit by one of the London clubs, as City drew with Fulham while United cruised past Chelsea.
As always, the number in parentheses is last week's ranking.
20. Wigan (17)
1 of 20Wigan's visit to the blue part of Merseyside was looking good until the 84th minute.
After Franco di Santo scored the opener in the 31st minute, the Latics were equalized two minutes later and then gave up two goals in the last six minutes of the match against Everton.
After getting points from their first three matches, Wigan are now in the middle of a two-game losing streak and have to host the on-fire Tottenham on Saturday at home.
19. Bolton (16)
2 of 20Bolton's miserable start to the season continued at home on Saturday as Owen Coyle's club lost to Norwich, 2-1.
Martin Petrov's second-half penalty was more of a consolation goal for the Trotters, who are in the middle of a four-game losing streak.
Bolton's rough schedule to begin the season has included both Manchester clubs and Liverpool. After a Carling Cup date with Aston Villa on Tuesday, they get to face Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday before hosting Chelsea next week.
18. Wolverhampton (14)
3 of 20Wolves suffered their second straight home shutout on Saturday at the hands of QPR.
The loss drops the club down to 10th in the EPL table with seven points heading into their home match with Millwall on Tuesday in the Carling Cup before visiting Anfield on Saturday to take on Liverpool.
17. West Brom (13)
4 of 20West Brom dropped to the bottom of the EPL table after suffering a 3-0 loss in Wales against Swansea.
The loss is already the fourth of the season for Roy Hodgson's club, and it could be deja vu for Hodgson, who had a horrible start last season with Liverpool before being sacked.
16. Swansea City (20)
5 of 20Swansea finally gave the home crowd at the Liberty Stadium something to cheer about.
Scott Sinclair, Leroy Lita and Nathan Dyer all found the back of the net in the Swans' 3-0 win over West Brom on Saturday.
The first win of the season boosted the Swans up to 14th place ahead of a trip to Stamford Bridge on Saturday to face Chelsea.
15. Norwich City (19)
6 of 20Anthony Pilkington and Bradley Johnson scored a goal each in the first half to give Norwich their first win of the Premier League season.
The goals came five minutes apart in the 37th and 42nd minutes and were enough to beat a struggling Bolton club, 2-1.
The Canaries' win at The Reebok Stadium was the club's first away win in the top flight in 17 years.
14. Arsenal (10)
7 of 20Arsenal scored a total of five goals on Saturday, but the only problem was that two of those five counted for their opponents, Blackburn.
Alex Song and Laurent Koscielny both recorded own goals in the second half and eventually handed the Gunners the loss as well in the 4-3 defeat.
Gervinho, Mikel Arteta and Marouane Chamakh did score for the Gunners, but Chamakh's 85th-minute goal was not enough to help stage a comeback at Ewood Park.
13. Liverpool (8)
8 of 20Liverpool suffered their second straight defeat on Sunday, but this loss was a bit more crushing as Tottenham blanked the Reds 4-0.
Kenny Dalglish's club have gone 217 minutes in the EPL without scoring a goal, their last coming in the 53rd minute in their win against Bolton on August 27th.
Before the Merseyside derby next week, the Reds visit Brighton in the Carling Cup on Wednesday before coming back to Anfield to host Wolves on Saturday.
12. Stoke (4)
9 of 20Stoke also suffered a 4-0 defeat on the road on Sunday, just like the club they beat last week, Liverpool.
The Potters' loss to Sunderland starts the beginning of a rough stretch of games in the next two weeks for Tony Pulis and company.
The good news is that the matches against Tottenham in the Carling Cup on Tuesday, Manchester United in the EPL on Saturday and Besiktas next Thursday in the Europa League are all at home at the Britannia Stadium.
11. Fulham (12)
10 of 20Fulham earned their one point on Sunday at home as they were able to come back and draw Manchester City 2-2 at Craven Cottage.
Bobby Zamora and Danny Murphy both found the back of the net in the draw, which was a positive result for the club who sit in 18th place with three points.
The Cottagers are now the only club in the EPL without a win, and a trip to The Hawthorns to face West Brom on Saturday would be the perfect opportunity for Martin Jol to get his first league win with the club.
10. Blackburn (18)
11 of 20Blackburn got plenty of help from one of their new signings and plenty of help from their opponents as well.
Two goals from Yakubu and two own goals by Arsenal propelled Rovers to a 4-3 win at home over the Gunners.
For now, the rumors of Steve Kean being sacked will be silenced, but if Rovers slip up against Leyton Orient in the Carling Cup or at Newcastle on Saturday, Blackburn fans could be back to protest against the manager keeping his job again.
9. Sunderland (15)
12 of 20The Stadium of Light was brought to life by the Black Cats on Sunday as the club defeated Stoke 4-0.
Titus Bramble, Craig Gardner and Sebastian Larsson scored a goal each and Jonathan Woodgate put an own goal into the net to give Sunderland two more goals than they scored all season and more importantly their first win.
Steve Bruce's club now have off until Monday when they visit Norwich at Carrow Road.
8. Queens Park Rangers (11)
13 of 20The new-look QPR made waves yet again on Saturday as they easily defeated Wolves on the road at the Molineux Stadium.
Joey Barton and Alejandro Faurlin scored in the first 10 minutes, and then D.J. Campbell finished the game off with a goal in the 87th minute.
Since their big acquisitions at the end of the transfer window, Neil Warnock's club have gotten four points from two games and have an interesting match with Aston Villa at Loftus Road on Sunday, where they will look to extend their unbeaten streak to three games.
7. Chelsea (3)
14 of 20Chelsea's trip to Old Trafford was a rude awakening as they gave up three first-half goals and were unable to come back.
Fernando Torres scored the only Chelsea goal in the 3-1 loss. The Spaniard should have had at least one more goal for the Blues, but he squandered some goal chances in the second half.
The Blues still sit in third place with 10 points, and their next EPL match at home is against Swansea on Saturday, a game in which they should easily take three points.
6. Newcastle (6)
15 of 20Leon Best was able to rescue a point for Newcastle on Saturday as the Magpies drew with Aston Villa.
The 1-1 draw keeps Alan Pardew's club in fourth place in the EPL table ahead of a visit from Blackburn on Saturday, four days after the club visit Nottingham Forest in the Carling Cup.
5. Aston Villa (5)
16 of 20Villa could only manage a point against Newcastle as they gave up an equalizer early in the second half.
Gabriel Agbonlahor scored his club-leading third goal of the season in the first half, but it was not enough to take the full three points.
Before making a visit to Loftus Road for a very interesting clash with QPR on Saturday, the Villains host Bolton on Tuesday in the Carling Cup.
4. Everton (7)
17 of 20Everton made a great late surge at Goodison Park on Saturday to energize the home crowd.
Substitutes Apostolos Vellios and Royston Drenthe scored in the last six minutes to power the Toffees' 3-1 win over Wigan.
David Moyes' club now have a tough test ahead of them in the Premier League as they visit Manchester City on Saturday before the Merseyside derby next weekend.
3. Tottenham (9)
18 of 20Tottenham may have yet again made the top signing of the summer transfer window.
Last season it was Rafael van der Vaart and this season it is Emmanuel Adebayor, who scored two more goals for Spurs on Sunday in their 4-0 rout of Liverpool.
Luka Modric and Jermain Defoe scored before Adebayor netted his double in the match at White Hart Lane.
2. Manchester City (2)
19 of 20Manchester City got off to a hot start at Craven Cottage on Sunday but could not hold on for the win.
Sergio Aguero scored his seventh and eighth goals of the season before Fulham came back with two goals of their own to end the match in a draw.
The draw drops City to two points behind rival Manchester United ahead of their Saturday home match with Everton.
1. Manchester United (1)
20 of 20United continued their dominant start to the season with a 3-1 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Chris Smalling, Nani and Wayne Rooney all scored for the Red Devils, as they brought their goal differential to an astonishing 17 goals through five games.
United will visit Leeds United on Tuesday in Carling Cup action before visiting the Britannia Stadium to face Stoke on Saturday.
