Floyd Mayweather vs Victor Ortiz: 10 Things We Learned from Las Vegas Saturday

King JSep 21, 2011

So it was another easy win for the undefeated American super star of boxing, Floyd Mayweather. who knocked out Victor Ortiz in the fourth round of their WBC world title welterweight fight Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Floyd advances his perfect record now to 42-0. Of course, to say this win was controversial would be quite an understatement for the legal sucker punch saw by millions was even talked about by millions more that night and through out the weekend.

If you thought you had drama at your home watching this on HBO Pay Per View with your friends and family, imagine the drama that took place in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand that night.

For those of you who were not in attendance as Michael Buffer often puts it, allow me to share with you:

10 Things We Learned From Mayweather/Ortiz in Las Vegas Last Saturday

10. Las Vegas Locals Do Not Care For Floyd Mayweather

Wearing my fight media credential around my neck while shopping at the high end fashion stores in Vegas such as Louis Vuitton, Tiffany's, Marc Jacobs, etc., random local Vegas employees of these stores came up to me and asked me who I was going for in tonight's fight. I then kept it simple and short and said betting against Mayweather is like betting against the Harlem Globetrotters, for he never loses, but of course, you cannot make any money betting on him either.

Every single local Vegas employee in these high end stores who asked me about the fight said they do not like Mayweather as a person. They told me he comes into their stores with his bodyguards and walks around like he owns the place. One employee told me he reportedly told her he could buy the entire store if he wanted to.

Another employee even told me he feels Mayweather has no local Vegas support anymore, and he feels the Vegas judges will put pressure on Mayweather to fight Pacquiao to bring more business to the hurting economy in Vegas.

Of course, these four random employees at these stores do not represent the whole city of Las Vegas, but if what they say is true, then his so called 24/7 Money May character(as he claims it is only a character) is how he really is even when the cameras are not on and rolling, if not worse.

9. Erik Morales Proves Why He Is Indeed A Boxing Legend

Erik Morales, the last fighter to give Manny Pacquiao his last loss, fought Manny two more times, losing very bad by knock out in the rematch, and even worse in the rubber match by sitting down on the canvas to avoid any further punishment by the pound for pound champion. Any lesser fighter would have been done and would either retire after such a one sided beat down, but not El Terrible. He fought on like a true champion does and made history as the first and only Mexican to win world titles in four different weight classes. He did it by defeating Pablo Cesar Cano by a 10th round TKO Saturday night, winning him the WBC light welterweight title.

Yes, there was much controversy in the fact that the WBC title was even allowed to be on the line that night, but hey, it was Mexican Independence Day weekend, and by this time of the night, most educated fight fans were already intoxicated by the numerous Tecate and Coronas to remember how mad they were initially.

Cano's face pretty much fell apart and became so bloody the referee had saw enough. This shows how great Morales is for winning his four world titles in four weight classes, but also how great Manny Pacquiao was to be the only fighter to beat him so convincingly bad through out his career and for him to bounce back and still make history.

8. Canelo Finally Stepped Up In Decent Competition

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, the "Justin Bieber" of Mexican champions, finally stepped up in taking on decent competition that night in fighting Alfonso Gomez who was 22-4. Gomez fought hard, gave Canelo trouble and even landed some big clean bombs that stunned him several times, but Saul just kept fighting on like a true champion should.

Ultimately Canelo TKO'd Gomez, as he was forced backwards into the ropes with his gloves high up and tightly guarding against the flurry of punches. Many at the ringside media sitting with me at the MGM Grand felt it was a premature stoppage. But most of the fight fans were more happy that it was time to refill beer and use the bathroom. for the real final main event was next.

7. Jessie Vargas Is Not The Future Of The Sport

Jessie Vargas, who is a protege of Floyd Mayweather, was given his first major exposure fighting Josesito Lopez on the under card at the MGM Grand. For several weeks, Floyd had been calling Jessie "The Future" of the boxing, so of course, all eyes were on Vargas that night to see if he would live up to the hype of his great mentor. Nothing about Vargas stood out as great or someone who could be the future of the sport. Some even felt the fight should have gone the other way for a decision to Lopez.

At the post fight conference, one young journalist asked Floyd if he would keep his word that if Amir Khan fought Vargas and beat him, then he would get to fight Floyd next. Floyd denied this right away by saying with a cheesy grin, "Sometime I contradict myself".

6. Mayweather Brings Out All The Biggest Names In The Rap Game

As soon as I finally made way to my ringside media seat after obtaining some sound bites in the media center conference room, and of course, eating the free media buffet, I saw several members of Lil Wayne's YMCMB team. The ones I saw walking around the ringside walk ways were not the famous recognizable ones like Nicki Minaj or Drake; these were the ones who had to wear shirts that actually said: "YMCMB" just so we could recognize who they were.

I didn't see Lil Wayne ringside, but he was there, for he had his own after party at Nikki Beach later that night. P Diddy has his own after party at Rain and Fabolous, whose fight with Mayweather's bro singer Ray-J took place at his own after party at Moon.

In all fairness to Manny Pacquiao, he too has been known to bring out the top rappers as well. We will follow up with those after parties come November for his fight with Juan Manuel Marquez.

5. Oscar De La Hoya The Rockstar Promoter

Oscar De La Hoya took the fight promoting game to the next level, with Golden Boy's Star Power extravaganza going on in both the Staples Center and the MGM Grand that night. The big buzz was that he promised to be present for both the Canelo/Gomez fight as well as the Mayweather/Ortiz fight.

Many journalists in the media room were debating how he was going to pull it off, via private plane or helicopter? I was talking to Power 106 legend Big Boy who told me he once took a private jet from LA to Vegas and made it in 27 minutes. So I guess Oscar with all his wealth and connections did indeed make it to the MGM Grand in no time.

I personally have never even seen him at the MGM Grand since the media ringside is at the complete other side of the ring from the promoters, celebrities and VIP's. Oscar didn't even appear in the post fight conference after the fight. One journalist told me maybe he left Vegas right away since he didn't want to be tempted by all that Sin City does to a man?

4. Denzel Washington Get's the Most Love Ringside

Prior to both fighters entering into the ring for the main event fight, Michael Buffer does his usual roll call and announces which celebrities are ringside that night. Everyone from Jamie Foxx to Magic Johnson all were there that night and got love, but the biggest cheers went to movie star Denzel Washington. Denzel is my favorite actor and a true inspiration, so it was good to see that he got the props that he so well deserves that night.

3. Floyd Ends The Fight With A Loud Controversial Bang

So now everyone and their mama knows Floyd won the fight by a highly controversial fourth round knock out that came with two big bombs landed on a Ortiz who was not looking and had his hands downs.

Yes these punches were ultimately legal, but most at the MGM Grand disapproved of the unsportsmanlike opportunity that Floyd capitalized on when both Ortiz and referee Cortez were not ready for. Many Floyd fans were rejoicing that their hero had just won by such a shocking knock out.

One man who appeared to be Caucasian started screaming, "F**** all you Filipinos!" at the top of his lungs as he ran around his ringside section.

This was obviously an attack to Manny Pacquiao and his country men fanbase. For the record, I did not see that many people who looked like they were of Filipino descent sitting ringside, and I personally think this man has some major unfortunate issues.

Then, all of the cheers for Floyd were overpowered by boos from the disappointed crowd who felt they were ripped off of what was supposed to be a closer competitive fight and for fans who strongly disapproved of the sucker punch heard around the world.

If you were to bet $100 on a fourth round KO for Mayweather that night, you would have won $2,500, for it was a 25 to 1 odds for that round.

A bet on a Mayweather KO would have doubled your wager for it was at 2 to 1 odds.

I met a big time VIP gambler that weekend who claims he bet one million dollars on Mayweather to win at -700. If what he says was true he only won less than $1,500 that night. But then again, if he had a million dollars to gamble with, then he probably wasn't that excited to only win such a fraction of his wager.

2. MGM Grand Boos Mayweather and Cheers Victor Ortiz and Larry Merchant

In the post fight interview, the angry/excited crowd was so loud that I could not hear what Larry Merchant was saying to Mayweather, but all I could see is Floyd becoming angry with what was just said and storming out of the ring. As Floyd made his way back to the lockers, he got most of the crowd screaming at him. Some were praising him for his win, and most others were booing him hard. I was hoping that it would not get more ugly than it was since if people were to start throwing things at him, then they would probably miss him and hit me since I was so close to the walkway from the ring to the locker room.

Victor Ortiz got love from the MGM Grand crowd as they stopped him to get pictures and autographs as he left the ring.

Surprisingly, Larry Merchant too got a lot of love as well as he walked to the locker room as fans shouted: "Larry, you are the greatest!" This shows that most fans were approving the blunt choice of words that Larry used in the post fight interview with Floyd.

Two young African American men came up to me wearing Floyd's Gucci like attire and asked me what I thought about the outcome of the fight. I then said, what do you guys think? They both said it was a dirty sucker punch and it took away any credit that Floyd would have gotten that night had he won without doing it.

1. We Did Not Obtain Anything We Did Not Already Know At The Post Fight Conference.

Did you guys hear Floyd announce at the post fight conference that he will indeed finally fight Manny Pacquiao next?........... No? well me neither.

Prior to the post fight conference beginning, I told some journalists that after going to the last couple of Mayweather post fight conferences, I can predict what he will say, and after the conference ended, those same journalists were impressed to see what I predicted he would say actually happened almost word for word.

Floyd thanks the fans and the media, then he reminds us how great he is and how all roads lead to Floyd Mayweather. Floyd then complains that the media does not give him a fair shake and that he beat everyone that they ever place in front of him. If they are his age, then they are too old; if they are younger, then they are too inexperienced. If they come up in weight to fight him, then they are too small. Floyd reminds us that we never give him the credit that he is due.

Whenever anyone asks about Pacquiao, Floyd dodges answering any direct questions almost as good as he can dodge most punches thrown at him. He answers the journalists questions about Pacquiao by discrediting Manny and by saying he and his promoter Bob Arum are lying.

Floyd again gives his famous speech about how you know a good athlete is great from day one, and if they become great all of a sudden by age 25, then they must be on something since that is not natural. If you do not agree with these statements, Floyd brings in about 25 people from his entourage who all cheer him on and laugh at all his jokes insulting others, so you may be swayed and convinced if you did not realize that Floyd strategically placed them there to make him look better.

In all fairness, Manny Pacquiao's post fight conferences are not that great either, for he too often dodges answering any direct questions on Mayweather by saying my job is the fighter and that Bob Arum's job is to tell him who to fight next.

It seems many of the journalists have came to realize whenever they ask Floyd about Manny, they will not get anywhere. One journalist even asked if Floyd is aware that Bob Arum said he agrees to full random testing now and that money is the only remaining issue from Team Pacquiao. Floyd then quickly disagrees and says Bob Arum is a liar and that anyone who writes that Manny has now agreed to full random testing is on Arum's payroll, and of course, Floyd's entourage all start clapping to that.

What would be better than Floyd actually announcing that Manny is next at this post fight conference?

The only thing better would be if Manny showed up and jumped on stage and said fight me next; let's do it for the fans.

But of course, we live in the real world and not a perfect world where things do not always happen the way we hope for.

But hey, Floyd can always show up on November 12 and crash Manny's party with Juan Manuel Marquez, but then again, that would mean that we would actually get what we wanted as true loyal fight fans, which would be highly unlikely from happening.
