Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: 5 Reasons Super-Fight Won't Happen

Joseph HealyJun 7, 2018

Over two years since the talks and negotiations began in earnest, we are no closer to seeing the one fight that many believe could bring boxing back to the forefront of the sports world.

That of course is a super-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.

When it first became apparent that these two were the top two boxers in the world, it seemed like all but a certainty that they would get together sometime soon.

Now, it seems like there is just too much working against this fight to make it happen.

The following are five of the things that are working against this match ever coming to fruition.

The Two Fighters' Timing Is off

1 of 5

Whether you like it or not, there's a decent chance that we will see a rematch of the Mayweather-Ortiz bout. The match ended in controversy and there is a ton of money to be made by all sides by putting on another fight between the two.

Assuming they would announce that rematch fairly soon, Mayweather's schedule will be booked for at least the next six months or so.

Pacquiao has a fight with Juan Manuel Marquez, the third in their series, coming up in early November.

Let's assume that Mayweather would take on Pacquiao after his rematch with Ortiz. The earliest possible time that both fighters would be available would be next September. I'm not sure that Pacquiao is going to want to sit around and wait to schedule a fight just to see what Mayweather wants to do.

To be frank, at the very least, we're looking at another year. If this saga were to go on that long, it's hard to imagine that it would ever get done.

Floyd Mayweather Is Concerned About His Unbeaten Record

2 of 5

To be clear, I'm not saying that Mayweather is necessarily scared of Pacquiao—I just think that he is very conscious of his place in boxing history.

He knows that his place in boxing history will be closely tied to his unbeaten record, if he can keep it that way.

If another lucrative fight opportunity were to arise that Mayweather felt was better suited for him, I think he would take it rather than wait around and try to negotiate something with Pacquiao and his representatives.

He simply isn't going to put other things on hold to try to work something out for this mega-fight when there is money to be made in other fights that give him a better chance to extend his unbeaten streak.

Floyd Mayweather Doesn't Care About Public Sentiment

3 of 5

The biggest reason given for why this fight will happen is that "it just has to happen, it makes too much sense."

For those who say that, I have news for you: Mayweather does not care what the public is clamoring for. He isn't going to agree to go into any fight just because it's what people want and think should be done.

Mayweather is driven by many things: he wants to win as many fights as he can, he wants to remain undefeated, and he wants to make as much money as he can.

He has no time for pleasing fans and media—at least in his mind.

Performance-Enhancing Drug Testing

4 of 5

This has most often been cited as the reason that this fight has not and will not happen.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has accused Pacman of using performance-enhancing drugs, and made it clear that he wants the strictest testing possible if he and Pacquiao are going to fight.

Pacquiao claims that the testing that Mayweather is suggesting is too invasive and that it would throw off his preparations for the fight.

It has gotten to the point now that it no longer matters which fighter is "right." Neither fighter is going to give an inch for fear of being pegged as the one that was in the wrong in the negotiations.

Manny Pacquiao Has a Lot Going on

5 of 5

You would be hard-pressed to find someone that has more going on than Manny Pacquiao.

In addition to being arguably the best fighter in the world, he is a congressman in the Philippines and an aspiring singer. Those are two other full-time job that require a lot of time.

At the risk of over-generalizing, Pacquiao also seems to be the type that would be fine with life outside of boxing. He is a devout family man and he has made it clear that he is committed to being the best congressman he can be in his home country.

If Mayweather continues to be difficult in his eyes, who's to say that he wouldn't figuratively take his ball and go home?
