Mayweather vs. Ortiz: Victor Ortiz Doesn't Deserve Rematch with Pretty Boy Floyd
Despite the controversial ending to his fight with Floyd Mayweather last Saturday night, Victor Ortiz has no right to look for an immediate rematch.
In case you missed it, or have somehow not heard about it yet, Ortiz deliberately head-butted Mayweather, and the referee stopped the fight and deducted a point from Ortiz.
Then, as the fight was getting restarted, Ortiz was apologizing and trying to touch gloves with Mayweather. But the referee turned his head for just a split second and Mayweather tagged Ortiz with a left-right combination and the fight was over.

Some fans and analysts, myself included, cried foul and thought that Mayweather used a cheap shot to get the victory. But regardless of how you feel about the end of the fight, nothing that happened in the first three-and-a-half rounds led you to believe that Ortiz was in Mayweather's class.
Despite a self-imposed 16-month layoff, Mayweather was at the top of his game in this fight. He was punishing Ortiz with an offensive flurry the likes of which he has not shown in a long time. His striking was so strong and precise that he did not have to show any defense until right before the head-butt.
Ortiz, for reasons known only to him, came out after the fight was over and said that he wanted a rematch because he didn't lose "fair and square."
I hate to break it to Ortiz, but he did lose fair and square.
The first rule of fighting, be it boxing or mixed martial arts, is to protect yourself at all times. The referee says it before every fight. It is the first thing that you are taught when you begin fighting in sanctioned fights.
Ortiz forgot that rule and he paid for it in the biggest fight of his life. But to ask for a rematch because he did not lose "fair and square" is ridiculous.
The referee called for the bell, Mayweather punched him after the restart and Ortiz was not smart enough to keep his hands up.
Maybe if Ortiz didn't try that cheap head-butt he would not have had to worry about apologizing to Mayweather, which in turn would have prevented him from being knocked out when he was.
Regardless, Mayweather was clearly the better fighter, Ortiz buckled under the pressure, and the right man won the fight.
Ortiz can ask for a rematch all he wants, but he did nothing in this fight to convince anyone that he can compete with Mayweather.
