NFL Power Rankings: Which Teams Are Better Than Their Record?

John RozumSep 19, 2011

Every season it seems there are those teams who have a deceiving record, end up beating an overrated team, and yet we wonder why their record doesn't indicate how good they actually are.

In some cases it could be the affects of a strong schedule, underachieving, or simply just not finishing games on a consistent basis.

Obviously being only two weeks into the NFL season it's hard to tell which teams are better than their record, nonetheless, we have three in the making.

Miami Dolphins

Currently the Dolphins are 0-2 and the only team in their division without a victory.

But fear not Miami fans, because you just played two of the AFC's best teams (New England and Houston) in your first two games.

The fact that Dolphins managed to stay within two scores of each team should tell you enough about how hard they have played.

QB Chad Henne was under a lot of criticism prior to the opening weekend, but thus far has silenced the cynics with 586 passing yards and three TDs in two games.

Yes he has two picks, but let's be honest, it could be a lot worse at this point.

All that being said, the defense improved from Week 1 to Week 2, and this week Miami travels up north to play the Cleveland Browns in Week 3, a very winnable game.

As the season progresses, Miami will get better, but they are in arguably the NFL's toughest division, so don't get too hyped up about them being better than their 0-2 record, just be aware that they are.

Carolina Panthers

Another 0-2 team are the Carolina Panthers, who have lost both their games each by a TD.

First came on the road against an Arizona Cardinals team that could very well win the NFC West, and then home to the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers.

Rookie QB Cam Newton has played lights out through his first two games as well, throwing for over 400 yards in each contest.

And despite LB Jon Beason being gone for the year, the defense has managed well enough to stay in games.

Come time for a mid-season playoff push, don't be shocked if the Panthers are in the thick of things because no one is expecting them to contend for anything.

In turn, that only makes them more dangerous and adds some excellent motivation.

Dallas Cowboys

Right now the Dallas Cowboys should be 2-0, but thanks to a fourth quarter relapse in Week 1 they are 1-1.

However, they almost blew it in game two at Candlestick Park in San Francisco as their rival 49ers got out to a 14-0 first half lead.

Big D came back to tie the game, but then fell apart and found themselves down 24-14 with less then ten minutes to play.

Yet, QB Tony Romo rallied the troops and was able to force OT, which the 'Boys won by a field-goal 27-24.

It took 13 unanswered points and a gutsy effort to win on the road after the odds were significantly against them, but Dallas now has much needed momentum heading into a big Week 3 Monday night matchup at home versus the 2-0 Washington Redskins.

If Dallas wins that game, it could very well be the turning point in their season while ruining it for their hated-rival Redskins.
