Mayweather vs. Ortiz: Vicious Lost, so What's Next for Him?
Victor Ortiz has a lot to look forward to in the ring, even after suffering a surprising knockout loss to Floyd Mayweather in their WBC welterweight title fight this past weekend.
With the fashion in which the loss took place there are a lot of people in Ortiz's corner, so he will be able to overcome it and get his career back on track.
Here is what's in store for Vicious now that he has come out of the biggest fight of his career with a loss.
Regroup and Refocus
Right now the best thing Ortiz's camp can do for the former WBC champ is to have him take a little time off and try to forget about what went down this past weekend.
Let him refocus his mind away from Mayweather, and not even worry about a possible rematch at this time.
Ortiz should start thinking of working his way back up and get back the same mentality that he had before entering the Mayweather fight, with the confidence he had after just beating a great fighter in Andre Berto.
Fight a Confidence Fight
Ortiz has the skills to jump right back into the ring with one of the top welterweight contenders in the world, but at a young age, getting his confidence in the ring back should be a top priority for Team Ortiz.
A few fights Ortiz could look at are against up-start Kell Brook. The 25-year-old British fighter has put up an impressive 24-0, with 16 KO's, and is ready to take on a fighter the caliber of Ortiz to see exactly where he stands.
Another possible confidence fight for Ortiz would be against undefeated American fighter Mike Jones (24-0, 18 KO's).
Beating a boxer on the rise would be a great confidence booster for Ortiz. It will show him that he is better than the rest of the fighters who are at a similar point in their careers—minus the big fights Ortiz has had—reassuring him he has what it takes to fight the likes of Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan.
Take on a Top Fighter After Getting His Confidence Back
After Ortiz takes on a confidence fight or two—and if he is able to win those fights of course—Vicious would be ready to take on a top fight boxer once again, and there are a few that he could get a shot at down the line.
A fight with junior welterweight champ Amir Khan would be a great fight between two of boxing's young stars.
Khan is expected to make the jump to the welterweight division after his fight with Lamont Peterson in December.
If Khan can't land the Mayweather fight he wants so bad, fighting Ortiz would be a very real option for the junior welterweight champ.
Another fight Ortiz could take is a fight against top welterweight contender Vyacheslav Senchenko.
The 33-year-old Senchenko (31-0, 20 KO's) last fought in August, beating Marco Antonio Avendano by TKO in the 10th round of their WBA title fight.
A fight with Senchenko would help weed out the top of the welterweight division, setting up a possible rematch with Mayweather or a title bout against Manny Pacquiao, if Money May doesn't get to him first.
