Arsenal: Jack Wilshere Tweets Encouraging Update on Ankle Injury

Matthew SnyderSep 19, 2011

Never one to hold back when posting on Twitter, Jack Wilshere provided Arsenal fans with a golden nugget of good news Monday.

After such a dispiriting weekend, when Gunners fans watched their side succumb in dreary fashion to then-last place Blackburn Rovers, they were in serious need of any possible glimmer of hope.

Posted on his verified account at 2:27 p.m. GMT, Wilshere provided this snippet:

While ankle problems are generally quite tricky to take care of—one need only remember Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen's endless struggles to regain fitness last season as testament—the fact that Wilshere is already back playing on it is excellent news.

He was expected to miss at least two months—with a possibility of three tossed about—as recently as a couple weeks ago. Wilshere aggravated the ankle back in early August, and at that time was optimistic he might only miss a few days.

Whether this already-prolonged spell on the sidelines is any indication that the 19-year-old midfielder's knock may spiral into a Vermaelen-esque type of conflagration remains to be seen.

For now, it's good to hope.

To reinforce this notion, Gunners teammate Aaron Ramsey was back much sooner than expected after injuring his left ankle exactly one week ago. He missed the midweek Champions League tie against Dortmund but was back in the starting lineup Saturday against Blackburn.

It just goes to show there are always different cases for different players.

Wilshere, who has yet to feature for the Gunners this season, would be a crucial addition to the center of the park, where the North London side has struggled for consistency so far this term. They are currently mired in 17th place in the Premier League standings, one point ahead of Fulham in the drop zone.
