Mayweather vs. Ortiz: Money Deserves WBC Welterweight Title Despite Sucker Punch

Matt FaulconerJun 7, 2018

Floyd Mayweather was dominating Vicious Victor Ortiz on Saturday night before the fight ended with a controversial knockout.

Controversy or not, "Money" Mayweather deserved to win the WBC welterweight title.

Mayweather was absolutely dominating the first three rounds of the fight, and was on path for an easy victory.

Up to that point in the fight, Mayweather had landed 73 punches out of the 208 that he had thrown, while Ortiz had landed just 26 of 148.

Mayweather's defense and hand speed were just too much for Ortiz to overcome, despite the fact that he landed a couple more punches in the fourth round.

Mayweather has been called out for what has been called a sucker punch, but was it really?

The fact is, Mayweather looked to jump on his opponent quickly after a restart.

The hit was well within the rules, which doesn't make it a sucker punch. The stoppage would have never even occurred if it wasn't for Ortiz's headbutt prior to the knockout.

After the fight, Mayweather defended the hit, according to ESPN.

"We touched gloves and we were back to fighting and then I threw the left and right hand after the break," Mayweather said. "In the ring you have to protect yourself at all times."

Mayweather is 100 percent accurate with that statement.

A boxer has to defend himself every second he spends in the ring. If you take your guard down, even for a second after a restart, Mayweather will make you pay.

That's exactly what he did on Saturday night.
