Mayweather vs Ortiz: Vanquished Ortiz Doesn't Deserve a Rematch with Money
The only thing that sucks more than getting beat in a fight is getting beat in a fight that ends on a sucker punch.
I can vouch. So can former WBC welterweight champ Victor Ortiz.
The reason Ortiz is the "former" champ, of course, is because he lost his belt to Floyd Mayweather Jr Saturday night in Las Vegas. Ortiz came into the fight against the 41-0 Mayweather as the underdog, and Money eventually knocked him out in the fourth round.
As you may have heard, though, the knockout wasn't exactly kosher. Mayweather hit Ortiz with a two-punch combo that came during what looked to be a timeout. It didn't help that referee Joe Cortez's head was turned.
Since then, a loose consensus has been established that Mayweather did nothing wrong. In fact, many agree he was in the right.
But that's not something Ortiz is going to agree to any time soon. Per the Las Vegas Sun, we know that Ortiz does not think it was a "fair fight," and he would love nothing more than to get another shot at Mayweather.
“I’m just blessed to be in this position,” Ortiz said on Saturday night. “But at the same time, I would love a rematch.”
The Sun notes that Ortiz's camp thinks Mayweather would agree to a rematch because of the money. He earned $25 million from Saturday's fight, and Ortiz's manager indicated that Mayweather would make more money from another fight with Ortiz than he would “with any other opponent.”
Right, because surely a bout with Manny Pacquiao wouldn't be worth as much as $25 million for Mayweather. Why the heck would people want to watch Mayweather fight Pacquiao when they could see him fight Ortiz again?
No doubt you're picking up my sarcasm, which is totally necessary in this case. The idea that a rematch with Ortiz would be the best meal ticket at Mayweather's disposal is beyond absurd.
But even beyond the money, there's no reason for Mayweather to agree to another bout with Ortiz. Mayweather was in control from the very start, and the only reason the fight was set up for its bizarre ending is because Ortiz got it in his head to headbutt Mayweather.
Ortiz came into the fight as the underdog because he was by far the more amateur of the two fighters. He certainly looked it, as he both delivered a cheap shot of his own and then broke an age-old boxing rule by dropping his guard.
Ortiz would likely be better the next time around against Mayweather, but I think we all know that there won’t be a next time around. Mayweather is at the point in his career where he needs to pick his fights very carefully. He chose to schedule a bout with Ortiz because it was the most convenient (and most lucrative) stepping stone to better fights. The only way a rematch would have been possible would be if Ortiz had won.
But he didn't. And as a result, the Mayweather vs Ortiz series will stop at one.
I don't know about you, but I'm not about to complain about that.
