College Football Rankings: Can Oklahoma Run the Table This Season?
When the schedule came out for the 2011 College Football season, the vast majority of people pointed towards the game in Tallahassee, Fla., against the Florida State Seminoles, as the biggest test on the Oklahoma schedule.
The Sooners came into Doak Campbell Stadium ranked No. 1 and they left the stadium with a 23-13 victory. The victory was a shout to the college football world that Alabama, LSU, and Boise State are not the best team in football, they are.
You will have detractors from the Oklahoma win last night who will say, “Yeah, but OU’s Quarterback Landry Jones couldn’t even throw for over 200 yards and had just one touchdown and an interception.”
To which I say, who cares? They won.
Or they’ll say, “OU still can’t find a running game and their best wide receiver Ryan Broyles was held to just 55 yards.”
To which I say, who cares? They found a way to win.
Now that Oklahoma got past their tough test against Florida State, they can now focus their attention to their Big 12 Conference schedule. However, when Oklahoma is at home, there is something about playing in Norman that makes this Oklahoma team, coached by Bob Stoops, almost impossible to beat.
Taking a look at their Big 12 schedule, they get a formerly ranked Missouri team next at home. Oklahoma plays Texas A&M at home this year as well.
Last night’s victory over Florida State proved, or should have proved, to everyone that this Oklahoma team can find multiple ways to win games. That being said, they have a tough road schedule.
They have to play on the road at a surprisingly good Baylor team and they end their season on the road in Stillwater, Okla., against Oklahoma State. Plus, there is that game in the Cotton Bowl against Texas that could end any perfect season for OU.
Yet all of these potential roadblocks that face Oklahoma will not matter. Because, this Oklahoma team has one of the best players in college football playing the most important position in quarterback, while having a defense that is giving up just 13.5 points per game.
This Oklahoma team can and should go undefeated this year, ending with Bob Stoops holding up the Coaches Trophy in New Orleans in January.
