Floyd Mayweather Video: Watch Money Threaten 80-Year-Old Larry Merchant
Floyd Mayweather Jr. has never had the greatest relationship with commentator Larry Merchant, and that was blatantly obvious after Saturday night's title fight against Victor Ortiz.
The fight came to a controversial end on Saturday. After Ortiz head-butted Mayweather in the corner of the ring, both fighters were brought to the center and touched gloves. With Ortiz apparently apologizing for the head-butt, Mayweather hit him with a left and a right and the show was over.
After the fight, Merchant hinted that Mayweather hadn't played fair after the break. This was met with Mayweather getting up in his face and declaring, "You ain't ever given me a fair shake," and "HBO should fire you," to which Merchant replied, "I wish I was 50 years younger and I'd kick your ass."
Who would have ever thought that the best fight of the night wouldn't have between Mayweather and Ortiz, but Mayweather and Merchant. Now that's a fight I'd like to see...if Merchant was 50 years younger, of course.
For a fight that last just four rounds, Merchant did his job. He gave us something to talk about when the fight did little to entertain us. That's why Merchant still has a job with HBO, and why nothing Mayweather says will change that.
And, honestly, I'm glad it happened. After 16 months of not giving us anything, Mayweather expects us all to crown him not only in the ring, but after a disappointing fight. Merchant was only expressing the feelings of everyone in the MGM Grand and watching worldwide. This is not how a title fight should end.
Whether it was a sucker punch or not in the ring, Mayweather tried to give Merchant one after the fight, and it was met with a knockout ending.
