Fantasy Football Projections, Week 2: 3 Waiver Wire Defenses That Will Dominate

Mike ChiariJun 7, 2018

As somebody who refuses to pick a team defense/special teams unit prior to the second-to-last round of my fantasy draft, I like to employ the strategy of "streaming" defense. This involves picking up a new defense each week based upon who they are playing.

While this doesn't always work, it can be pretty successful if you can identify poor offenses that these particular defenses can have a field day against. Here are three defenses that are likely on the waiver wire in your league that will dominate in Week 2 thanks to weak competition.

Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos' defense was decimated by Darren McFadden and the Oakland Raiders' running game last week, but things should get a bit easier in Week 2. The Broncos face an offensively-challenged Cincinnati Bengals squad at home. While stopping Cedric Benson won't prove to be an easy task, the Broncos can be successful if they stack the box.

Rookie quarterback Andy Dalton is unlikely to hurt them, so Denver can focus solely on stopping the run. It is always advisable to start defenses against rookie quarterbacks, especially early in the season.

Not only will Denver's improved pass rush anchored by Elvis Dumervil and rookie Von Miller have a good day, but Champ Bailey and the secondary will have plenty of opportunities to intercept passes.

Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts looked absolutely terrible in every facet of the game against the Houston Texans in Week 1. This is especially true of the defense which gave up 34 points. Indy's defense did have to work with a short field on a few occasions, though, so the lopsided score makes them look a bit worse than they actually were.

The Colts will get a chance at redemption this week against the Cleveland Browns, who may very well be the worst team in football at the moment. The Colts will have to slow down Peyton Hillis on the ground, but that wasn't much of an issue for the Bengals last week.

Colt McCoy isn't likely to kill them through the air either, so the Colts are a safe play against a fairly stagnant offense.

Buffalo Bills

Entering the season, the Buffalo Bills were considered to be among the league's worst teams on both sides of the ball. A 41-7 whooping of the defending AFC West-winning Kansas City Chiefs has helped change the opinions of many, though. The Bills will face a very one-dimensional Oakland Raiders' offense on Sunday.

While running back Darren McFadden could give the Bills fits, an early lead would work wonders for Buffalo. If the Bills can force Jason Campbell to pass, then there will be sacks, interceptions and defensive scores galore.

Campbell's crop of receivers is weak in the first place, but both Jacoby Ford and Louis Murphy are out, while Darrius Heyward-Bey is questionable. The Bills' defense will come up huge in Week 2.
