Mayweather vs. Ortiz Undercard: Latest Betting Odds and Predictions
Step aside, UFC fans! It's time for some good, ol' fashioned boxing, with Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Victor Ortiz set to duel for the WBC Welterweight Championship at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas tonight. That heavy-hitting matchup will be joined on the main card by Erik Morales vs. Pablo Cesar Cano and Saul Alvarez vs. Alfonso Gomez.
Let's have a quick look at each of those fights, breaking down who will win and what each man's odds are, courtesy of bodog.com.
Erik Morales (-750) vs. Pablo Cesar Cano (+475), O/U 9 /12 Rounds
There are plenty of reasons for Erik Morales' huge advantage on the betting line. At 35 years old, Morales (51-7, 35 KOs) is an all-time great and a three-time division champion gunning for his fourth title, which would make him the only Mexican fighter to ever achieve that feat. Morales' two-and-a-half-year retirement would seem to set him back in most cases.
Just not against Pablo Cesar Cano (22-0-1, 17 KOs), a 21-year-old youngster who fell into this fight on a week's notice. Cano may have the edge in vitality, but he finds himself far behind in speed and experience against a legend of Morales' caliber. Look for Morales to take Cano to school in the ring and show his kid competitor how to be a Hall-of-Famer.
Saul Alvarez (-1300) vs. Alfonso Gomez (+725), O/U 10 1/2 Rounds
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (37-0-1, 27 KOs) is on the verge of greatness, and not even an entertaining slugger like Alfonso Gomez (22-4-2, 11 KOs) will keep him from taking the next step.
The 21-year-old Alvarez is a rising star, a young ginger who puts butts in the seats and backs it up with loads of talent in the ring. The 30-year-old Gomez will certainly make a good fight of it tonight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, but he'll ultimately find Canelo too strong, too fast and too skilled in a fight that won't likely go the distance.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. (-500) vs. Victor Ortiz (+350), O/U 11 1/2 Rounds
And then there's the fight of the night—Floyd "Money" Mayweather (41-0, 25 KOs) against "Vicious" Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KOs). The 24-year-old Ortiz's only chance in this one is to turn this one into a slugfest.
Ortiz is a powerful puncher who can do some serious damage. However, he has neither the quickness nor the skill to survive 12 rounds against a defensive specialist and methodical boxer like Mayweather.
With the way the weigh-in went on Friday, don't be surprised if Mayweather baits Ortiz into lunging and goes in for a knock-out blow on the counter to push his record to a perfect 42-0 and set up a fight with Manny Pacquiao sometime next year.
