Mayweather vs. Ortiz: War of Words Won't Upstage Battle in the Ring
After a wild weigh-in that saw the normal pre-fight confrontation turn physical, it’s time for all the trash talking to be put aside and the war in the ring to take place.
When undefeated Floyd Mayweather takes on WBC Welterweight champion Victor Ortiz, the battle will finally be fought.
The match is one of the most anticipated in the last few years, and this could be the precursor to one of the most anticipated superfights in the history of boxing.
While the boxing world is pulling for Mayweather to carry his undefeated streak into a possible fight with Manny Pacquiao, many people are pulling for Ortiz to shock the former great and usher in a new era of welterweight boxing.
Mayweather told BBC News about his desire to end the fight early:
"He [Ortiz] says the fight won't go the distance. I say the fight won't go the distance and so hopefully it won't. I'm a good finisher, too. So, when I hurt you, don't grab me, don't hold on at all. I'm going to finish you off.
"
All of the trash talk that has been expected of Floyd Mayweather pre-fights was there, but it wasn’t nearly as influential on his opponent as it had been in the past.
Mayweather used to have a real aura around him, but he has become almost a caricature of the man who was the most dominant welterweight for a long time.
24-year-old Ortiz has come into this fight with no fear of Mayweather, but instead, he has spent months studying the boxer’s tendencies.
With a southpaw stance, Ortiz has the power and speed that can give Mayweather trouble and the road to victory isn’t as easy as Money thinks.
Ortiz told BBC News about his mindset heading into the fight:
"I have nothing to lose. He has everything I want. I hope the actual Floyd Mayweather shows up. I don't want a Mayweather that's lost his speed or power. He's got that beautiful mouth that just never stops, but I'm going to knock him out.
"
Ortiz is defending his belt, but the true prize for Ortiz will be the recognition and stature he obtains by defeating the undefeated Mayweather.
Ortiz has handled all of the publicity well, and there is nothing in the way of his fame besides Mayweather, but he will be ready for this opportunity.
This bout to will be one of the hardest fought fights from both parties, and this fight will not go the distance with both men throwing haymakers.
I expect Ortiz to bring this fight to Mayweather and eventually catch the undefeated star with a punch in the later rounds that sends him to the mat.
Either way this fight ends, it promises to be a slugfest, something we haven’t had in a long time.
