BMW Championship: Day 2 Highlights, Scores, News and More

Carlos TorresJun 7, 2018

At the 36-hole mark, we have a two-way tie for the lead at the BWM Championship. Day 1 leader Justin Rose was joined by Mark Wilson atop the leaderboard.

Rose, who had a dream round yesterday when he birdied half of the holes in the course, shot a three-under today. He was actually in front by a shot over Wilson entering the 18th hole, but he bogeyed the hole to fall into a tie for first place.

Rose did not drive as accurately as he did in Round 1 and had a bogey on the par-4 13th for the second day in a row.

But he had this round’s highlight when he eagled the par-5 15th followed by a birdie on the par-4 16th.

Wilson started two shots back today and had a bogey on the first hole to fall three back. But that was his only blemish on today’s round. He moved into first-place after four straight birdies as he rounded the turn, from holes eight through 11.

Wilson is a two-time winner this year and was already assured of playing next week at East Lake. But right now he is making a case for not only winning the FedEx Cup, but maybe even Player of The Year depending on how he fares the rest of the season.

Webb Simpson is the current FedEx Cup points standings leader and like Wilson, he started the day two shots back. He shot a three-under for a nine-under total, still two-shots back from the lead.

After a bogey-free round yesterday, Simpson had one today at the par-5 fifth. Other than that he has been very solid.

Like yesterday he didn’t have a great day driving. But along with Rose, he leads the tournament in hitting the Greens-In-Regulation (GIR).

Australian John Senden is fourth and needs a top-five finish in order to qualify for the Tour Championship next week. So far so good, as he improved his three-under from yesterday with a five-under today for an eight-under total.

Senden was having a bogey-free round until the 18th green. He had a stretch of three straight birdies from the sixth through eightth holes today; his strength so far for the tournament has been his putting.

Tied for fifth at six-under are Bill Haas and Robert Allenby.

Hass started the day at one-under, tied for 18th. After shooting five-under today, he moved up 13 spots and closer to the top of the leaderboard.

He made four birdies and one bogey in his final five holes to complete his charge up the leaderboard.

Allenby made the turn after birdies in three straight holes. He made par the rest of the way, keeping pace and staying even in the positions of the tournament.

He needs a top three finish to make the Tour Championship.

The Biggest Moves Up the Leaderboard

Brandt Jobe and Brendon De Jonge had the day’s best rounds at seven-under. They both finished the day tied for 15th after moving up 41 spots on the leaderboard.

They were followed by Matt Kuchar, moving up 30 spots into a tie for seventh, after his six-under day. Kuchar is third in the FedEx Cup standings.

The world’s top ranked player and fourth in the FedEx Cup standings, Luke Donald shot a five-under today after his disastrous four-over yesterday. He moved up 29 spots and is tied for 27th.

Another player that disappointed yesterday but more than made up for it today was Jason Day. He is sixth in the standings and shot a six-under today, moving up 27 spots into a tie for 38th. He is even for the tournament.

Chris Stroud (up 22) shot four-under and is tied at 15th at three under. Andres Romero (up 20) shot a five-under. He is tied for 45th at one-over.

Some other big names made big moves up the leaderboard today. One of them was Masters Champ Charl Shcwartzel (up 19) who shot three-under and is tied for 27th at one-under.

The other three moved up 18 spots and are tied for 7th at five-under. They were PGA Champ Keegan Bradley, David Toms and Brandt Snedeker.

Steve Stricker’s Streak is Over

Steve Stricker had to withdraw from the tournament due to neck pain. This marks the end of his streak of 40 consecutive cuts made. He had the longest active streak and now that lead goes to Charl Schwartzel who has 18.

Stricker is currently eight in the FedEx Cup standings and will not receive any points this week. He is projected to fall to 12th place.

FedEx Cup Projections

After two rounds, two players are projected to fall from the top 30: Y.E.Yang (down from 28 to 32) and Kyle Stanley (down from 30 to 33).

FedEx Cup defending champ, Jim Furyk, is projected just outside the top 30 at 31. He started the day tied for fifth and he needs a top five finish to make the Tour Championship. He shot a one-under and fell into a tie for 12th.

The two players that have moved into the top 30 are Justin Rose (up 34 to fourth) and John Senden (up 55 to 24). Rose needs a top 12 and Senden a top four finish and that is right where they are right now.

Early Tee Times for Saturday

Due to a conflict with NBC Sports and Notre Dame, the tee times for the third round were moved up. The players will be going off both the first and 10th tees and playing in threesomes.

The first players are scheduled to tee off at 8:25 a.m. EST, and the last groups at 10:25 a.m. EST.

The top three on the leader board, second-round co-leaders Justin Rose and Mark Wilson and FedEx Cup points leader Webb Simpson, will tee off at 10:15 am EST.
