Boise State vs. Toledo: Kellen Moore Will Shoot Down Rockets on Path to BCS
No. 4 Boise State has enjoyed a full extra week to bask in the glory of a 35-21 trouncing of the Georgia Bulldogs, a fact which cannot make Toledo very happy.
Kellen Moore and the Broncos will hit the road out of Idaho once again to take on the Rockets at the Glass Bowl on Friday night, though their eyes can't help but wander down south to the coveted crystal ball. The Smurf Turfers have as good a chance as any non-AQ school has ever had of capturing a BCS National Championship.
They have all the necessary ingredients for a perfect storm—a top-five ranking early in the season, a favorable schedule (and that's putting it lightly) and three teams ahead of them that could easily drop a game or two each within the next few weeks.
Of course, the Broncos need only leapfrog two out of three, between Oklahoma, Alabama and LSU. The Crimson Tide and the Tigers will tangle in Tuscaloosa on the first Saturday of November, which, if Boise State holds serve and the pollsters' minds finally begin to turn, should push the Broncos up a spot.
In the meantime, Chris Petersen's club will turn its attention to Toledo, a legitimate threat out of the Mid-American Conference. The Rockets came within 48 seconds of upsetting No. 17 Ohio State at the Horseshoe last week. Coach Tim Beckman's boys failed to convert on fourth down at the Buckeyes 17-yard line, allowing the home team to sneak away with a 27-22 win and preserve OSU's perfect record against in-state opponents.
The Rockets remain confident from that affair and won't be afraid of the mighty Broncos, especially with the game being played in Toledo. They certainly should have won in Columbus, but were undone by a rash of penalties—14 for 102 yards, to be exact.
Toledo won't have anywhere near that sort of margin for error against a Boise State squad loaded with talent and experience. Moore is just one of 18 seniors who currently starts for the Broncos and will have plenty of help, from receivers Kyle Efaw, Matt Miller and Tyler Shoemaker, as he takes the next step forward into the Heisman Trophy race.
As far as environment is concerned, the Broncos will hardly be intimidated playing on the road. After all, they had no trouble working over a Georgia team playing in front of a Bulldog-friendly crowd of more than 70,000 people in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
That's nearly triple the capacity of Toledo's Glass Bowl, which holds just over 26,000 fans.
And, just in case you're still not convinced that Boise State can and should win by a mile, look no further than last year's meeting between these two teams. The Broncos dominated from start to finish in Boise. Kellen Moore threw for 267 yards and three touchdowns, the defense forced five turnovers and the home team protected its blue turf in a 57-14 romp.
All of this points to one simple fact: Barring some sort of miracle on Toledo's part, Boise State should win handily to push its season record to 2-0 on its inevitable march back to the BCS.
