Mayweather vs. Ortiz: Floyd Gets in Victor's Head By Bringing in Ex-Trainer
The mental games have begun.
The Floyd “Money” Mayweather-Victor Ortiz fight is less than 48 hours away and the intensity is really starting to heat up.
Mayweather has invited Ortiz’s ex-trainer Robert Garcia to the bout and according to the LA Times, there was a reason for doing so:
"Not only did Ortiz drop Garcia as his trainer after a 2007 bout, claiming the trainer was "mean," he hired Garcia's brother, Danny, as his new trainer.
That created such a severe falling out in the Garcia family that Robert and Danny are not on speaking terms. It doesn't help that their backyards in Oxnard butt up against each other.
"
We knew it was coming.
Mayweather is 34 and Ortiz is 24, a 10-year age gap that gives Floyd the mental edge. Stirring up a tough memory from an already very tough life is not going to sit well with Ortiz.
HBO’s 24/7: Mayweather and Ortiz spent a large amount of time discussing the whole situation with Ortiz and he was visibly upset and angry about the whole situation with his ex-trainer. Striking up these sort of strong emotions on fight day could make Ortiz lose his focus.
It’s all part of the games that are played before the match and I must say…it’s brilliant.
Garcia was the father figure in Ortiz’s life and was the man that helped him take his boxing career to the next level.
Yet Mayweather had even more diabolical plans up his sleeve that ended up getting extinguished:
Mayweather was reportedly contemplating asking Robert Garcia and his star fighter Rios to accompany him into the ring with Ortiz, but Robert Garcia said he "wouldn't be comfortable" doing so. He said he did want to attend the fight, however, and was pleased to receive an invitation from Mayweather advisor Leonard Ellerbe on Wednesday.
Wow.
That would have been a huge deal.
The man is undefeated for a reason. This was a strong tactical move for Mayweather and one that gives him the mental edge.
Sure it’s an incredibly mean move to make…but that’s boxing. You find an edge any way possible regardless of how evil it may be.
This was a smart move that could end up paying off in a big way.
