College Rivalry Week or "BCS Beatdown Bonanza"?

Football ManiaxsNov 23, 2008

By Nostradamus

I must say, it was a pretty interesting weekend in college football. Instead of it being called "Rivalry Week," it should have been titled "BCS Beatdown Bonanza."

In games featuring top 10 ranked teams we had the following final scores: 42-7, 70-19, 49-18, 48-24, and 65-21.

Three of those games featured matchups between top 15 teams, including the 65-21 shellacking that Oklahoma put on former No. 2 Texas Tech.

So what did we learn?

Texas Tech is definitely not ready for primetime. On the other hand, Oklahoma definitely is.

Utah shouldn't be overlooked. Penn State is kicking themselves.

Time to give Cincinnati some much-needed respect.

The days of Charlie Weis at Notre Dame are likely numbered.

How does the BCS picture look now?...

Texas Tech

I hate to say I told you so, but...I told you so. Don't get me wrong, Texas Tech is a good football team, but they are still a far cry from competing with the best of the best in College Football. I have a ton of respect for what Mike Leach is doing down in Lubbock, but his normal tactics that work against middle of the pack Big 12 teams just doesn't cut it on the road in Norman, OK.

The worst part about this loss? It will likely keep Texas Tech out of a BCS bowl game. With a win over Baylor in their season finale, an 11-1 Texas Tech team will likely be rewarded with an invitation to the Cotton Bowl.

Then again, maybe it is rightful justice for scheduling Eastern Washington, SMU, Nevada, and Massachusetts in their non-conference schedule.

Oklahoma

As much as Texas Tech just wasn't ready, Oklahoma had it strapped on and ready to go from the opening kickoff. Without a doubt, that was one of the most impressive offensive showings that we have seen this year. Balanced, aggressive, controlled, and simply devastating. All told, the Sooners rolled up 625 yards of offense and 65 points. Of those yards, 299 were gained on the ground, while 326 were via the air.

You can bag on Texas Tech's defense all you want, but you have to respect the well-oiled machine that was the Oklahoma offense last night. I am not sure there is a stop unit in the entire country that would have held OU under 50 last night. Now if we could only get an OU vs. Florida matchup in a BCS bowl game.

Utah

A big congratulations is in order for the Utah Utes. Their win over in-state rival BYU has likely wrapped up a BCS bowl bid. However, the real question is, do they deserve more? More as in a shot at the national title?

I can't say that I would go that far, but look to hear some uproar from a team and a conference that was more than competitive with BCS schools over the course of the season. Going undefeated in the WAC or MAC is one thing. Going undefeated in the MWC this year is quite another.

It will be interesting to see how the Utes play in their BCS bowl game. Here is hoping they draw a worthwhile opponent instead of the pathetic Pittsburgh-type team that they faced the last time they went undefeated and made it to a BCS bowl.

Penn State

No doubt about it, this Penn State team has got to be kicking themselves right about now. Two weeks ago, the Nittany Lions held a 23-14 lead with 10 minutes to go in their game with Iowa. Ten unanswered points, including a last second field, and the Nits dream season came to a crashing halt.

I did find it odd that Joe Pa was...
