NFL Power Rankings: Which Teams Look Like Division Winners?

John RozumSep 14, 2011

It's only been one week so far in pro football. However, teams that didn't appear to be contenders within their own division have now caught some attention.

Also, there are those that were preseason favorites, but have faltered, as well as those who have met or exceeded expectations.

That being said, here is one team from each division that currently looks like the clear front-runner.

AFC North: Baltimore Ravens

Any time you can handily defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers, especially early in the year, then it's a safe bet that the season is off to a good start.

And the Ravens did just that, by forcing seven turnovers in their 35-7 Week 1 victory.

This week, Baltimore travels to Tennessee, so it'll be interesting to see if the defense can continue to dominate, despite the Titans having RB Chris Johnson in the backfield.

AFC South: Houston Texans

Since their inaugural season in 2002, it's been a long time waiting for Texans fans who deserve a solid pro football team.

The last time the city saw their pro football team make the playoffs was the Houston Oilers back in 1993. But 2011 is very promising after their 34-7 win over divisional-rival Indianapolis.

In Week 2, Houston travels to Miami, and with a Dolphins defense looking to prove themselves, it's an intriguing matchup for the Texans to see if their offense can keep rolling.

AFC East: New England Patriots

Although you could say the New York Jets, after both franchises' Week 1 performances, it's clearly the Pats in the AFC East.

And until Tom Brady slows down, and the Jets play a full game and dominate, it's going to remain New England in this one.

However, with the reloaded San Diego Chargers in Week 2, things could get even more interesting, and fast.

AFC West: San Diego Chargers

Last season, the Chiefs overachieved while the San Diego special teams cost them the division title and a playoff spot.

So far this season, the Bolts still need to improve the special teams, but the offense and defense still look stellar.

Facing New England this week, we could see the Chargers' true colors.

NFC North: Green Bay Packers

Until they get dethroned in 2011 (and that is "if"), the Packers are still the NFC favorite.

Also, with Detroit on the rise and the Bears looking solid, this could arguably be the NFL's best division.

Now, although Green Bay visits Carolina this week, don't think the Panthers won't come ready, because Cam Newton dominated in Week 1.

NFC South: New Orleans Saints

In Week 1, all four teams from the NFC South lost, but the Saints proved to be the best, as QB Drew Brees shredded the Packers' defense despite falling just short.

And with both Atlanta and Tampa Bay on the fritz, The Big Easy is the favorite.

They play the Bears at home this week, so inter-NFC divisional reputations are on the line once again.

NFC East: Philadelphia Eagles

No surprise here with the Eagles leading, but one concern is the entire division's strength.

Who knows how long the Redskins can maintain, New York is underachieving, and Dallas may be lacking confidence after giving one away to the Jets.

This week, Philly travels to Atlanta, and with the Falcons needing a W, the Eagles better come prepared.

NFC West: Arizona Cardinals

Still arguably the NFL's weakest division, the Cardinals shook off the Carolina Panthers in Week 1, while the 49ers defeated the Seahawks thanks to two consecutive Ted Ginn return TDs.

That being said, Arizona appears to have the best squad as evidence by the additions of QB Kevin Kolb and TE Todd Heap.

However, don't count out the St. Louis Rams as the season progresses, as they have a lot of potential.
