One Fan's Opinion on the Title Situation in the WWE
There is something that has been bothering me about the championship titles in the WWE for some time now. The championship belts have been losing all meaning. They are only being used as props, whereas they used to be a sign of prestige within the company.
Recently, U.S. Champion Dolph Ziggler and Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes have begun to talk about their titles in a better light. They both have stated that they want to bring the honor and prestige back to their respective titles.
Why is it that the guys that are viewed as true heels in the WWE have been giving their titles the most respect? Rhodes, Ziggler, Otunga, McGillicutty and Alberto Del Rio all wear (or in the case of Otunga and McGillicutty, wore) their titles around their waists. I don't know if I'm the only one out there who thinks this, but I feel that a small act such as that goes to show that they care about the belt they earned.
Cena throws the belt down, playing to the crowd when he goes to the ring. I remember vividly seeing Shawn and HHH throwing their tag belts when they came to the ring during a match. When Jeri-Show had the four tag belts, Jericho would wear one and sling the other. Show gets away with not wearing them on size alone. But he still never cast them aside like trash.
Kofi and Evan Bourne both had them in hand on last nights RAW. I personally can't recall when Kofi has ever worn one of his belts around his waist. During the days of the Hardy's vs. Dudley's vs. Edge & Christian, all three teams wore those belts to the ring.
The only Diva to wear their belt on a regular basis in recent memory for me is Michelle McCool.
Maybe I'm missing something in the whole heel/face psychology and the belt respect, but to me, wearing the belt that you have earned shows that you care about it. Once I see people caring about the belt on a regular basis, I will start caring about those belts again too.
Let me know if you agree or disagree with me, and feel free to provide examples on both sides of this debate.
