Alabama Football: Why LSU Deserves No. 2 Spot over Crimson Tide
The new Top 25 polls have been released, and for some reason the Alabama Crimson Tide leaped the LSU Tigers for the No. 2 ranking.
Sure, the Crimson Tide played a ranked opponent and the Tigers didn't, but it wasn't enough to surpass them in the polls.
Both teams are likely to flip flop back-and-forth the rest of the season, which means their game on November 5 will be a fantastic showdown.
However, for right now, the Tigers are more worthy of the No. 2 ranking.
Each team has played a cupcake opponent, where both teams scored in the high 40's and only allowed one score. The Tigers gave up three points to Northwestern State in Week 2, and the Crimson Tide only gave up seven points to Kent State in Week 1.
It's easy to see that LSU and Alabama have phenomenal defenses, but based on what we've seen so far, the Tigers are the better team.
LSU took a risk and played the best team in the Pac-12 to open the season, and they won with ease. Ranked No. 3 at the time, the Oregon Ducks were expected to give LSU a run for their money, but the SEC team prevailed and proved why they're legit contenders in 2011.
Alabama on the other hand traveled up north to Happy Valley to face Joe Paterno's then-ranked No. 23 Penn State Nittany Lions. They too won with ease, but realistically, the Nittany Lions never should have been ranked.
In fact, Penn State is unlikely too see the Top 25 for the rest of the season, whereas Oregon will remain a BCS contender.
I give the Crimson Tide credit for scheduling a good out of conference game, but from what we've seen this season, the Tigers deserve the No. 2 ranking.
Defense is the strength for both teams, but the quarterback position is still somewhat of a battle for both LSU and Alabama.
It's tough to say which defense is truly better at this point, and thankfully that will be answered later in the season, but LSU has proven they're the better team right now.
The next three weeks will determine where both teams are at, as they both play one easy opponent and then two ranked teams.
With only two weeks to go off of though, the voters failed to realize the great accomplishment LSU made in Week 1, and they disrespected them by giving Alabama the No. 2 ranking.
