Boise State Football: Pathetic Schedule Should Keep Broncos out of BCS
College football fans, and anyone opposed to the BCS, have been rooting hard for Boise State to go undefeated every season and sneak into the national championship game, if for no other reason than to turn the whole system on its head.
Unfortunately, that dream will not turn into a reality in 2011.
It is not Boise State's fault, but it is the reality of the situation. Head coach Chris Petersen has turned this program into one of the best in the country. The problem, and this has been the case against them for years, is the schedule that they play.
The Broncos usually play at least two ranked teams throughout the course of the season, but as things stand now they will only play one team ranked in the Top 25—TCU on November 12. They started out the season against Georgia, which was ranked No. 19 in the preseason AP Top 25, and were impressive in defeating them.
But Georgia has fallen fast after losing its first two games of the season, and now Boise State is left hoping that the other teams it plays will run the table to make its schedule look better than it is.
The Broncos moved to the Mountain West Conference this season hoping that it would benefit their schedule and help them at least get into the conversation for the BCS Championship game.
Instead, the move looks like it is going to hurt their chances because TCU, the only other team that can be described as a "powerhouse," has taken a step back this season after losing Andy Dalton, and the Horned Frogs are moving to the Big East next season.
So does a team that plays only one team that is currently ranked in the Top 25 deserve to be put in one of the five big bowl games?
If there is a one- or two-loss team in the Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, ACC or SEC that does not win its conference, should Boise State, a team that is playing one above-average team all season, be put ahead of them?
No, there is no way to justify doing that. I understand that none of the major conference schools want to play the Broncos because they don't want to lose to them, but that is just the way college football works.
The major conference schools have created a monopoly, and they are not going to risk their season on a game against Boise State.
We all root for the Broncos to go undefeated because we want to see the BCS broken.
But even if the Broncos go undefeated this season, and there is no reason to think they won't, they do not deserve to play in a BCS game ahead of schools that have won 10 or 11 games against superior competition.
