Kansas City Chiefs: Todd Haley's Unprepared Team Gets Blown out at Home by Bills

Farzin VousoughianJun 7, 2018

It was ugly from the moment the ball was kicked off. Dexter McCluster returned the opening kickoff and fumbled the ball at the 26-yard line.

From that point forward, the Buffalo Bills did not look back and went on to destroy the Kansas City Chiefs, 41-7. The Bills did anything and everything that they wanted to do in this game on all three phases.

Throughout the preseason, Todd Haley had talked about how he plans to approach games. However, following Sunday's game Haley said multiple times that he takes full responsibility for what happened. He claims that it is his fault that his team was not prepared for this game.

“I am taking 100 percent responsibility for our team not being able to be ready to go,” Haley told the media during his postgame press conference. “You can point the finger right at Todd Haley.”

While Haley decided to not name any players who were specifically responsible for the loss, Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel admitted that he and his teammates need to be held accountable.

“As players, we take responsibility too,” Cassel told the media during his postgame press conference. “It is never 100 percent on the coaches. The responsibility, whomever anyone wants to point the finger at, starts with us as players, then coaches and everyone else.”

It is obvious that no one on the team was ready for this game. The Bills were not taken seriously and that came back to haunt the Chiefs. Many optimistic Chiefs fans gave the Chiefs the clear edge to win this game.

In the eyes of many Chiefs fans, this was the easiest game on the schedule. The Chiefs getting blown out in the 2011 opener was the last thing most NFL fans expected, and it gives Chiefs followers little reason to believe it will get better throughout the season against opponents with bigger credentials.

Haley and the Chiefs know they need to bounce back next week against the Detroit Lions. Haley is ready to put this game behind him and make sure his team is better prepared going into Week 2.

“I will have them more ready to go next week,” Haley said. “We need to have a chance to get back to 1-1 which is the number one goal right now.”

If the Chiefs want to put their record at .500, they may have to do it without safety Eric Berry, who was hurt twice in the game and did not return after the second time with a (left) knee injury.

After an unexpected blowout, Haley is on the hot seat and must do everything in his power to make Week 1’s loss to Buffalo a long distant memory.
