EPL Hot 11: Sergio Aguero, Wayne Rooney Carry City and United in Match Day 4
The Premier League continues to be all about Manchester, as both clubs maintained their flawless records with convincing results against Bolton and Wigan.
Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero each recorded hat tricks, Javier Hernandez scored a double in his first start of the season, and City's David Silva and Samir Nasri showed why they are top playmakers in the league.
With both at least eight goals clear of the next highest scoring team, there is valid reason why seven of the Hot 11 members belong to the Manchester clubs.
Every Wednesday, 11 footballers in the Premier League will make up the EPL Hot 11, a fluctuating power ranking that highlights the top performers over the course of the entire season. Dependent on their match-day performances, players may move up or down the list each week.
Wayne Rooney
1 of 11Wayne Rooney became just the fourth player in EPL history to notch back-to-back hat tricks, as United's No. 10 was relentless in the club's 5-0 win against Bolton.
That puts Rooney's scoring frenzy at eight goals in the young season—two ahead of City's Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko.
After Rooney's shaky scoring form in 2010, his 2011 production has been off the charts so far.
Sergio Aguero
2 of 11City's most expensive signing of the summer is already paying big dividends.
The Argentine international has recorded six goals in four games for the club, including a hat trick in City's most recent win, a 3-0 result over Wigan.
The former Atletico Madrid man is aligning his skills well with David Silva and Samir Nasri, which is proving to be one of the deadliest trios in the Premier League.
Javier Hernandez
3 of 11Javier Hernandez made his first start for United after a summer of nagging injuries, and the young Mexican didn't disappoint.
While Wayne Rooney stole the spotlight with his hat trick, Hernandez cleaned up the mess with a double of his own, recording his first two goals of his 2011 campaign after a very successful 2010 season with United.
With Danny Welbeck sidelined with hamstring issues, and only just returning to training, a wide door for playing time opens for Chicharito.
David Silva
4 of 11Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini gave huge praise for his midfielder David Silva following the club's 3-0 win over Wigan on Saturday, putting the Spaniard on the same level as Barcelona midfielders Xavi and Iniesta.
In Silva's second season in a City uniform, the 25-year-old has cemented himself as one of the premier creative midfielders in England's top flight. The rapport between the newly-signed duo of Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri has taken City to the top of the table, sharing a lead with city rivals United.
Silva notched his first two assists of the 2011 campaign on Saturday. With the number of scoring options in City's attacking third, the Spaniard's contributions should only increase.
Samir Nasri
5 of 11Already, the former Arsenal playmaker is making waves for Manchester City.
The French international recorded three assists in his debut two weekends ago, and he followed the international break with another dime to fellow newcomer Sergio Aguero.
Manchester United may have the edge in goals scored, but the midfield trio of Aguero, Nasri and David Silva is shaping up to be one of the deadliest in the Premier League.
Nani
6 of 11Nani contributed with consistency in United's title campaign last season, and he is finally on the assist sheet in 2011.
In the club's 5-0 result over Bolton, Nani provided two assists in the onslaught, his first two of the year.
As United's scoring form continues, Nani should only become more involved on the score sheet.
Daniel Sturridge
7 of 11The young England striker may have secured the goal of the week in the Premier League, shoving a back-heel dribbler that barely found its way into the net.
After a successful and praiseworthy loan spell with Bolton last season, Daniel Sturridge has returned to Stamford Bridge with a chance to compete among some of the EPL's top strikers in Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres and Nicolas Anelka.
Perhaps more flashy antics like his goal against Sunderland is what the 22-year-old needs to up the ante for more playing time. Certainly, scoring more goals will help his cause.
Emmanuel Adebayor
8 of 11Emmanuel Adebayor has gone there, and back again, the past few seasons—jumping from Arsenal to Manchester City to a loan spell with Real Madrid, before finally securing a spot with Tottenham.
The Togolese striker immediately helped to ameliorate the Spurs' poor start to the 2011 season, scoring in his debut match against Wolverhampton.
The one-time Gunner is the type of menacing, physical striker that Harry Redknapp needed to supplement his bevy of speedy and clever midfielders.
Ashley Young
9 of 11Recording a goal and an assist for England's senior squad, the international break proved to have no effect in Ashley Young's form however.
Though United's top summer signing didn't have much of a say in the club's 5-0 stomping of Bolton on Saturday, his presence is invaluable.
Still fresh in our minds is Young's two-goal, three-assist effort from two weekends ago against Arsenal, where United thumped the Gunners 8-2 at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils' ferocious scoring form has continued, and Young has had quite the hand in the club's fortunes.
Edin Dzeko
10 of 11A week after scoring four goals in a 5-1 final against Tottenham, Edin Dzeko didn't play a single minute in City's 3-0 result over Wigan, putting his place in the EPL Hot 11 in jeopardy.
Still, Dzeko shares the club lead for goals scored with Sergio Aguero, with six. Only Wayne Rooney outshines them both in England's top flight.
City will have a lion's share of fixtures this season, with Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup and EPL games to juggle. Dzeko will have a hand in all of them, and his Premier League form is brilliant.
Asmir Begovic
11 of 11The Stoke City keeper performed wonderfully over the weekend against Liverpool, recording his third clean sheet of the young season.
The Potters' good form has them creeping on the top four of Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Newcastle, despite the club's mediocre scoring form.
The Yugoslavian-born Begovic had a series of quick-witted saves against the Reds, and Stoke has capitalized on his sure hands.
