College Football Rankings 2011 Week 2: Which SEC Team Will Fall the Farthest?
Another Saturday, another day filled with landmines of underrated teams. The SEC proved not to be exempt from such disasters.
It took one former SEC giant to nullify a great start by this season’s success story. The Mississippi State Bulldogs lost to the Auburn Tigers in a game that assures Mississippi State of a precipitous fall.
That was not the end of it. Late Saturday, South Carolina played a tight game with Georgia that will surely see both teams' reputation take a hit despite the exciting action. Here is a breakdown into both games.
Note: This does not take into account Saturday night games.
No. 12 South Carolina 45, Georgia 42
The Georgia Bulldogs are hardly worthy of top-25 aspirations. They proved their defensive deficiencies when they were trounced last week by Boise State.
South Carolina had the horrible disposition of facing a team wanting to make a statement. That they survived does not help their cause with voters. Georgia is not well-thought-of in 2011, and South Carolina had to rely on a late fumble to secure a win.
Auburn 41, No. 16 Mississippi State 34
This one hurts. I really liked Mississippi State and their intelligent players. Lead by the cerebral running back, Vick Ballard, I felt they had enough to get past Auburn.
In the end, they didn’t have as much man power or talent to breach the top 15. Much like Chris Relf was stopped at the goal line, Auburn stopped the Bulldogs rise in the rankings.
Who Loses?
This week is easy pickings. Even Vince Young could figure out that the Bulldogs suffer the greatest blow to their ego, reputation and stock with voters.
One man’s loss is another’s gain, as Auburn should once again make an appearance in the top 25. The SEC proves to be a deadly conference to play in.
