Garry Cook, CEO of Manchester City, Steps Down, but How Will Man City Cope?

Mohamed Al-HendyJun 7, 2018

After a week of controversy, Garry Cook, Manchester City's CEO since 2008, has stepped down over controversy surrounding an email sent to a player's mother.

Reportedly, Garry Cook sent an email to Anthonia Onuoha, Nedum Onuoha's mom, ridiculing the mother's cancer, about a week or so back. When Ouoha complained to the club about the email, an investigation was conducted, and concluded with the resignation of Garry Cook.

Garry Cook has been with Manchester City since May 2008, in ex-chairman Thaksin Shinawatra's last days with the club. He has overseen player recruitment as his primary responsibility since the arrival of the Abu Dhabi United Group.

This means that he's been largely responsible for the recruit of expensive flops like Roque Santa Cruz, Emmanuel Adebayor, Craig Bellamy and Jo.

But it also means that he can largely be credited for the acquisition of players like Carlos Tevez, Vincent Kompany, Nigel de Jong, Gareth Barry, Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko, David Silva, Yaya Toure, Gael Clichy, Alexander Kolarov, Kolo Toure, Joleon Lescott, Samir Nasri and more.

As you can see, Garry Cook has brought in many, many more successful players to Manchester City than flops, and recently his success rate with purchases has risen markedly.

So what will the impact of his resignation be on Manchester City?

Reportedly, Manchester City have already given Director John MacBeath the assignment of working to find a capable CEO to come in and replace Garry Cook, in coordination with the rest of the Manchester City board. Will Manchester City be able to find someone as ambitious and hard-working as Garry Cook?

Or will Manchester City return to the old days, when sub-par players were regularly recruited by the club at exorbitant rates and later sold for a much reduced fee?

Make your opinion known on Garry Cook's resignation, and its impact on Manchester City, known below. I look forward to reading your comments and discussing them with you.
