*Sewanee, or "College of the South," was a charter member of the SEC from 1933 until 1940 when they de-emphasized varsity athletics. Georgia Tech and Tulane were both charter members in 1933, but Georgia Tech left in 1964 and remained an independent until joining the ACC in 1978. Tulane left in 1966 as an independent, remaining so until 1996 when they became a charter member of C-USA.

*Chicago was a charter member of the Big Ten when it formed in 1896; the Maroons dropped football in 1939 and subsequently dropped out of the conference for all athletics in 1946. However, the University of Chicago still maintains an affiliation with the Big Ten through the committee on institutional cooperation.
Only three teams can claim this distinction, and of the three, Michigan, is the only one in any danger of coming off this list anytime soon. They lead Big 10 newcomer Nebraska by only a single game.
All-time records: Alabama leads USC 5-2 and trails Michigan 1-2. Michigan leads Alabama 2-1 and trails USC 4-6. USC leads Michigan 6-4 and trails Alabama 2-5.
These are three of the biggest powerhouses in college football history. Alabama claims 13 national championships, has 799 wins and a .703 win percentage. Michigan claims 11 NCs, has 878 wins and a .736 win percentage. USC claims 11 NCs, has 766 wins and a .706 win percentage.
