Pittsburgh Penguins: Could Sidney Crosby Announce His Retirement?

Justin WeltonSep 6, 2011

Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins is the National Hockey League. The NHL needs Crosby to be healthy, but there is one problem—he isn’t.

Or is he?

Crosby is having a press conference Wednesday at 12:30 pm to discuss his status. That means that he could say he is ready to play, or that he is able to take contact or could he possibly call it quits?

There is absolutely no way that Crosby’s announcement tomorrow will be about his retirement. The 24-year-old has nothing to gain from making that big of an announcement at such a young age.

That is the rumor that is floating around the web on misinformed blogs. Nothing of note has come from reporters who cover the team, the Penguins management or Crosby himself.

Whatever his decision is, the whole situation is scary.

People are different when dealing with concussions. Some people can partake in contact the week after, but some people take longer.

In Crosby’s case, it is much longer. Seeing as his concussion took place at the turn of the New Year, it has been roughly eight months since Crosby seen playing time for the Penguins.

Just when it seems like Crosby could make a comeback he has a setback with headaches.

Hopefully—for the NHL as a whole and the Pittsburgh Penguins—Crosby says that he is able to come back at 100 percent.

Who knows?

It is tough to tell whether the news will be positive or negative.

My guess is this: The worst possible situation will be that Crosby will sit out the entire 2011-12 NHL season.

The best possible situation is that he will be back at 100 percent.

Forget retirement. It won't happen.

Penguins fans, NHL fans and anybody who loves sports should be hoping for the best. The game isn’t the same without Sid The Kid.
