Maryland Football Uniforms 2011: Terrapins' Unis Dismay More Than Football Fans
Maryland’s football uniforms on Monday against Miami were not only heavily mocked by College Football Nation, they’ve actually drawn the ire from the sport of roller derby.
While college football enthusiasts were adjusting their TV screens on Monday due to the multitude of bright colors shining off the Terrapins, Baltimore’s own Charm City Roller Girls couldn’t help but realize how strikingly similar the uniforms were to their own.
Said the roller derby team’s captain, Hillary “Rosie the Rioter” Rosensteel, via the Baltimore Sun, “They’re not identical, but they’re shockingly similar.”
Rosensteel (if that is her real name) and her teammates have been wearing a similar uniform for three years now, patterned off the Maryland state flag bursting with gold, red, black and white.
Said Rosensteel:
"“The consensus is their new helmets are very much like the design we developed. We were surprised about the new design that Terps are wearing because it’s so similar to our helmets that we’ve been wearing for a good three years.”
"
That’s right, Under Armour and the Terrapins appear to have copied the designs they used for their helmets. Ironically enough, their helmets were the worst part of their uniforms.
That’s why it’s hard to believe they saw the Roller Girls and exclaimed, “Wow! What an excellent idea!”
In reality, both probably look similar simply because they’re designed after the same state flag. Even Rosensteel admitted that it was most likely “just a coincidence.”
One thing’s for sure: the disaster that was displayed all over the field on Monday has not only boosted media attention for the school, it’s also brought some recognition to the Charm City Roller Girls.
Then again, maybe both shouldn’t be that thrilled about the attention, given it’s largely coming from a negative angle.
