WWE: Did the New Nexus Deserve to Be Dismantled and Disbanded?

Graham GSM MatthewsSep 6, 2011

Nearly 15 months ago, NXT Season One Winner Wade Barrett made one of the biggest and most impactful Raw debuts in WWE history, by forming the vicious Nexus stable at the start of 2010's grim summer. The group of young rookies would go on to target then-WWE Champion John Cena, as well as make the statement that they were rising up against the likes of WWE management.

Although the Nexus saw original members such as Darren Young, Skip Sheffield and the controversial Daniel Bryan part from the stable along the way, Barrett still managed to hold the rookies together to eventually reach the pinnacle of success by recruiting their arch nemesis, John Cena, in early October of last year.

However, Cena's eventual departure from the WWE would reduce the Nexus to nothing more than a group of easily beaten down, weakened savages. Barrett would soon be replaced by the outspoken CM Punk at year's end in an attempt to resurrect the dying breed, but it was painfully apparent the newer version of the group didn't have the same threatening feel to it as it's predecessor.

Now titled the New Nexus, Punk's new role seemed to be slightly overshadowed during his on-going feud with Randy Orton going into WrestleMania 27. The more recently added members, including Michael McGillicutty, David Otunga and Mason Ryan, were put on the disabled list in the process, while Husky Harris hasn't been seen since his brutal ambushing.

With the Nexus at its weakest, viewers began to assume that the group was heading nowhere except back to FCW, given that Punk was furthering himself from his stable mates as he headed towards super stardom in the main event picture.

About two and a half months ago, I wrote an article regarding the future of the New Nexus, following the Straightedge Superstar's historic announcement about leaving the WWE on the June 20th edition of Raw. Ironically enough, I was correct in predicting the imminent downfall of the New Nexus without their leader, as Michael McGillicutty and David Otunga severed all ties with the group at the start of last month.

However, the question still remains: was the once red-hot faction deserving of being dismantled?

In my opinion, WWE stopped caring about the controversial group at the dawn of 2011, when plans with Punk leading the group fell through and were apparently dropped. Sure, they had amazing potential to be one of the most dominant, memorable stables of all time following their shocking debut, but the predictable ambushing they would deliver became stale over time, to the point where they would receive minimal heat once "We Are One" struck the arena.

Despite reportedly high merchandise sales from the Nexus t-shirts, dropping the ball on arguably on one of the most different, vicious and rebellious stables in recent history still baffles me to this day.

Although I would have preferred an official end to the stable similar to the nWo many years ago, I'm glad the New Nexus was quietly disbanded, instead of beating down a dead horse in the attempt to establish a new leader. Who knows, maybe we'll be lucky enough to once again hear the infamous chorus of 12 Stones somewhere down the line.

Thanks for reading, Bleachers, and be sure to voice your opinions with your thought's on the ending state of the New Nexus. As always, your "likes," comments and feedback is highly appreciated. GSM out.
