Brock Lesnar: Former UFC Champion Gets Perfect Return Fight vs Alistair Overeem

Adam WellsJun 2, 2018

Brock Lesnar has had his share of trials and tribulations since joining the UFC in 2008. But now he is ready to put all of that behind him as he prepares for his much-anticipated comeback, which will take place against Alistair Overeem on December 30.

The news was broken early Tuesday afternoon by UFC President Dana White via Twitter and it will cap off a run of main event fights the likes of which we have never seen.

Including the Anderson Silva vs. Yushin Okami fight last month, every championship will be defended between now and the end of the year. And now Brock Lesnar will fight for the first time since losing to Cain Velasquez at UFC 121 last October.

Lesnar has had his detractors in mixed martial arts because they feel that he was getting pushed by the company because of his name and celebrity status, instead of making him prove himself before throwing him into the big time.

If that criticism wasn't bad enough, two bouts of diverticulitis have taken away two prime years from his career. But all that is behind him and he appears ready to get back the UFC heavyweight championship.

Overeem, according to the Los Angeles Times, signed a standard contract with UFC just weeks after he was released from Strikeforce due to problems with his Golden Glory management team.

As the only heavyweight champion in Strikeforce history and the current DREAM interim champion, Overeem has been wanting to prove himself against the best heavyweights in mixed martial arts, and now he has his chance against the biggest star in the sport.

It has also been announced that the winner of this fight will take on the winner of the Cain Velasquez-Junior dos Santos championship fight on November 12.

Lesnar needs to win this fight to prove that he is back, healthy and able to compete at a high level. He is 34 years old and does not want to fight forever, so he has to strike while the iron is hot. Another loss will set him back in the heavyweight division.

Overeem needs to win this fight to prove that his 11-fight unbeaten streak is legitimate and not just a case of taking on sub-standard opponents. He has wanted to join UFC for a long time and now he gets his shot against the biggest star in the sport.
