Mayweather, Pacquiao: Boxing's Troubling Inability to Talk About Anything Else

Matthew HemphillSep 7, 2011

Today there will be at least several articles on Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz and how it will play out.

In a few months the same thing will happen with Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez.

While both are happening there will also be articles made about the mythical Mayweather vs. Pacquiao match that isn't happening.

That is the problem.

Boxing is literally writing about one fight and then complaining how the sport gets no coverage.

Where are the stories on the up-and-coming prospects whom no one gave a chance to?

Where are the interviews with the champions who fumble their English, but not their punches?

Where are the journalists who should be writing these kinds of articles?

They are publishing another Mayweather vs. Pacquiao article.

And it's because it's going to get views.

Everyday on this site there are plenty of new articles written; only a few make it to the top and it's easy to see why. They are part of boxing's biggest story, which inevitably involves at least one, if not both of the aforementioned boxers.

The reason why more boxing journalists don't deviate from the norm is simple: They wouldn't have an audience.

Sad as it is to admit, boxing fans have decided they don't care about younger fighters who might have interesting stories or a veteran who is taking one last run before retiring.  If you don't believe me, take a quick view at any Mayweather vs. Ortiz article, and then a look at any article that has nothing to do with that fight.

Numbers don't lie and neither do boxing fans.  They don't want varied stories with interesting characters.  They just want another rehash of the same thing that they had last week.

Just like a boxing PPV, the top-heavy structure of boxing articles leaves a lot to be desired.  It might be interesting when it comes to talking about the two main players, but when it comes to the guys on the lower level, the undercard, most journalists don't put much energy into the assignment if they write about anything else at all.

Boxing needs to write about multiple fighters.  They need to get the word out on different people and fights.  They need to spread the word and stoke a fire among fans about boxing on a grassroots level.

They need to be willing to lose a few casual fans to get something new across.

They need to take a cue from the men in the ring they cover.

They need to take a risk.
