AP Poll College Football 2011: 3 Teams That Will Tumble After Week 1
Week 1 in college football instantly reminded us why every week on the college football schedule is exciting. The top-25 AP Poll, is due for a shakeup.
While many top teams schedule easy opponents in their first game, and waltzed to easy wins, there were also plenty of interesting matchups, and an upset or two. Check out the following teams that are already set to tumble down the rankings.
Notre Dame
Previous Rank in AP: 16
Someone tell me why Notre Dame was ranked in the preseason top-25 again?
Time and again, Notre Dame is touted in the early season, and then they fall flat on their face during the season. They wasted no time face planting in 2011.
Notre Dame was upset in their opener against South Florida, 23-20. Say goodbye to that 16th ranking Notre Dame. You will be out of the top-25, and I don't see you making it back in until the release of the next preseason poll.
Notre Dame could not get out of their own way in their game against the Bulls. This was a game they were supposed to win easily, and yet they struggled with all phases of the game.
Notre Dame tried to mount a late comeback after a halftime quarterback switch, but their fate was sealed.
Starting QB Dayne Crist found his way to the bench after a horrible first half. He was off target and unable to come up with any big plays the entire half. He was just 7-15 with 95 yards and had an one interception.
Sophomore Tommy Rees took over play calling duties in the second half, and he proved to be much more productive for both teams. Rees went 24-34 with 294 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Notre Dame's 16th preseason ranking looks like an absolute joke. This team won't even crack .500.
Georgia
Previous Rank in AP: 19
Georgia is coming off of a 6-7 season. They were embarrassed in the Liberty Bowl by UCF and they lost their best player in AJ Green.
Coach Mark Richt has been on a steady decline at Georgia since 2007. That decline is going to continue. There is little there that suggest they deserve to be ranked in the top-25. Yet there they were. The first game only adds fuel to the fire.
While there is no shame in losing to Boise State, Georgia failed to stop much of anything Boise State ran on offense, and a 14-point loss at home is always a bad sign.
Kellen Moore chucked three touchdowns as Boise State dominated the second and third quarters to roll past Georgia, 35-21.
Auburn
Previous Rank in AP: 23
The Tigers are set up for a championship hangover of massive proportions. This team earned a 23rd ranking in the preseason polls, and proved quickly in their first game that they didn't deserve it.
They escaped with the win, but barely, and it came against a Utah State team they should have dominated.
This is a fatally flawed team that is weak in the trenches. They were dominated on the offensive and defensive lines by Utah State. As a result, Utah State took Auburn down to the wire, and although Auburn escaped with a victory, it is clear this team is nowhere near what it was last season.
Auburn allowed 448 total yards of offense in this game. Of those yards 227 of them came via the ground game. Utah State went again and again to the ground game, and it kept working. They had a 4.3 yards per carry average on a whopping 53 carries.
This led to Utah State controlling the time of possession. They led in time of possession by over 15 minutes. This is not a good sign as Auburn heads into the SEC portion of their schedule. They may hang onto their top-25 ranking, but it won't be for long.
