South Carolina vs. ECU: Has Steve Spurrier Coached Himself out of BCS?
South Carolina rolled into their opening game matchup with big expectations. They had their biggest breakthrough of the Steve Spurrier era by winning the SEC East in 2010, and all signs pointed to them building on that success in 2011.
Stephen Garcia was given a second shot by Spurrier, to give his team an experienced and talented QB. Marcus Lattimore, who rushed for 1,197 yards last season, returned. And everyone expected them to also get immediate results from the nation's No. 1 recruit, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.
All of this led to South Carolina being ranked No. 12 in the country and being favored to win their opener against ECU by as much as three TDs. It's not looking good so far. As I type the Gamecocks trail 24-14 as teams regroup during halftime.
This would be a crushing defeat for South Carolina, and would leave them absolutely zero wiggle room for the rest of the season if they are going to have any chance at making a BCS run.
What’s Gone Wrong? Third Downs
South Carolina is failing on third downs. Especially on defense. They have actually outgained EVU in this one by 10 yards, but their defense cannot get EVU off the field. EVU is 5-10 on third downs in the first half. South Carolina is just 3-7.
What’s At Stake? BCS Possibilities
It is going to be virtually impossible for South Carolina to make a BCS bowl game if they lose this game. Yes, they could run the table in impressive fashion and make it in, but playing in the ultra tough SEC, that is not a likely possibility.
Upset Potential (on scale of 1-10): 5
South Carolina has some good things going for them. Most notably is that they may be on the verge of taking this game over on the ground. South Carolina gained 110 yards on the ground on 19 carries. Lattimore has 40 yards on 10 carries, and could be ready to run over tired defenders in the second half.
How will voters react? Horrifically
Teams don't walk out of a loss in their opener to a team they are a three-touchdown favorite to beat with their top-25 status in check
Will Team South Carolina Come Back?
Fear not, SC fans. South Carolina will find a way to pull this one out 34- 31.
