The Casket Match

Andrew KelleherNov 18, 2008

It seems that yet again, the undead will face one more challenge on his road to dominance. For months now, since his return, we have seen The Undertaker in one of two situations, dominating, or dominated. The Undertaker has been thrown a whirlwind of opponents over the last few months that range from Chavo Guerrero to the current challenger, The Big Show.

At Survivor Series, The Undertaker and The Big Show will square off in an Undertaker original…the dreaded Casket Match.

Over the past few weeks, we have seen repeated attempts by The Big Show to make sure The Undertaker does not even make it to Survivor Series. Yet one has to ask, isn’t it the Big Show’s quest to destroy the Undertaker? Why take him out before you have the chance to beat him in his own Match?

It is not a well-known fact that The Undertaker is UNDEFEATED in the Casket Match. Through the years, Undertaker has slammed the door on wrestlers like Mark Henry, Randy Orton, Kane, Cowboy Bob Orton, and even The Big Show once before. So who has more to gain?

The Undertaker is looking to retain one of his long-running WWE Records, whether he knows it or not. Currently, Undertaker possesses two Major WWE Records. We all know, the Undertaker is 16-0 at Wrestlemania, a feat that no one in the industry’s history has come close to.

In addition, as previously stated, the Undertaker is, I believe, 13-0 in a Casket Match. His closest match thus far has been his Two-On-One Handicap Casket Match against the team of Cowboy Bob Orton and Randy Orton. However despite the overwhelming odds he faced against one of the industry’s most dominant families, The Undertaker prevailed.

The Big Show is entering his second encounter with The Undertaker in a Casket Match. Both of these men have scored a victory over the other in the last two Pay-Per-Views. So while The Undertaker is looking to retain his undefeated status, The Big Show is looking for a little redemption over his long time rival. Can The Big Show do what no man has ever been able to do? Can he truly shut the door and seal the Undertaker’s fate?

Both man are towering in around seven feet tall, with Big Show standing somewhere around 440 lbs. and The Undertaker around 320 lbs. Will that 100 lbs. difference mean anything in the match? Most likely, no.

We have seen Undertaker out-power numerous superstars in his career, many of which were presumed and sometimes actually much stronger than him. The Great Khali, Giant Gonzalez, Kane, these are all men that have challenged the Undertaker in the past, and they have all fallen to the same fate…defeat.

Truly, both men have a lot on the line this Sunday at Survivor Series. But if you asked my opinion, I’d be looking for The Undertaker to walk out of the Boston Gardens Arena. With age, The Phenom is fading away from the top of his game, but he still stands as one of the most dominant superstars in the history of the WWE.

Big Show has a lot of heart, and a heavy fight to put to The Undertaker, but to quote Triple H, “It’s all about the game, and how you play it.” This Sunday, The Big Show is playing Undertaker’s game, a game that the Undertaker knows all too well how to win.
