Inter Milan: 5 Reasons Why Forlan Will Succeed In Italy
Diego Forlan recently signed with Inter on a two-year deal from Atletico Madrid for a fee worth €5m.
Forlan was brought in as a replacement for the departing Samuel Eto'o, and is under immense pressure in his first year at the club.
Despite Forlan's past success, many pundits have scrutinized the signing and it is up to Forlan to prove his class and show that he can bring success to Inter.
Ability
1 of 6Diego Forlan is a World Class player. On the field, he is considered a master of dead-ball situations, and rarely misses a goalscoring opportunity.
His incredible vision, and consistency have helped him to win:
- The Trofeo EFE (given to the player in La Liga with the greatest accumulation of points).
- The European Golden Shoe 2x in 04-05 and 08-09 (given to the top goalscorer in the leading divisions of Europe).
- The Pichichi 2x in 04-05 and 08-09 (given to the top goalscorer in La Liga), and the 2010 FIFA World Cup Golden Ball (given to the best player of the tournament).
Proficient in the air, as well as with the ball at his feet, Forlan is a complete player, who makes up for his lack of pace, with deadly precision, decision making, and intelligence. There is no doubt that Serie A has a new superstar amongst their ranks.
Familiarity
2 of 6Diego Forlan joins an Inter squad that contains 13 South American players.
Already having competed on an International, as well as Club stage, against many of the players, Forlan should settle well in Italy with the help of his comrades.
Transitioning from one league to another is often difficult, but many players desire compatriots that can make the process easier.
We have seen in Carlos Tevez's instance, that settling can be tough without a few members of the squad to fall back on. The quality shown by Forlan should attract his teammates immediately, and a quick transition to the league will help Forlan dominate the opposition.
Supporting Cast
3 of 6Diego Forlan has been a part of some of the best sides of the past decade, and Inter is no different.
The pressures of achieving success are often alleviated when a player can rely on his supporting cast to produce consistently.
Forlan has played with the likes of Sergio Aguero, Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani, Juan Roman Riquelme, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Juan Sebastian Veron, David Beckham, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, and countless others.
He has always had quality alongside him, and is at his best when he is NOT the lone superstar on the team. Having Sneijder, Milito, Pazzini, and Zarate to work with will help him to raise him game and make his mark on Serie A.
Consistent Success
4 of 6Diego Forlan has been victorious at each European club that he has been a part of.
During his time with Manchester United, he secured the Premier League, FA Cup, and FA Community Shield, before moving to Villarreal, where he helped his team secure the UEFA Intertoto Cup.
After leaving Villarreal for Atletico Madrid, he helped guide the team to UEFA Europa League success, as well as leading them in their defeat of Inter to win the UEFA Super Cup title.
On the international stage, he recently aided Uruguay to the Copa America title by scoring two goals in the final. Forlan is a proven winner, and he will be eager to earn success in Italy.
Motivation
5 of 6At 32 years old, Diego Forlan has most likely signed his last contract with a major European club.
Players his age are not in high demand, and he must understand that he is in his prime, and he must take advantage of his superb abilities while he still can.
He has not yet had the chance to lead a team to UEFA Champions League victory, and with players like Lucio, Maicon, Sneijder, and Milito surrounding him, he has never been so close.
Time is against him, and he must give his all if Inter are to win major trophies this upcoming term, and I believe that a motivated Diego Forlan, is a dangerous Diego Forlan.
