Recent Technological Advancements Have Allowed Men To Watch Sports In Peace
It is a tale as old as time.
Man wants to sit on the couch and wants sports, while woman wants to do absolutely anything other than sit on the couch and watch sports.
For anyone out there that is married, you will know all too well that having a wife significantly cuts into your sport watching time.
I personally follow three sports closely; the NFL, college football, and the PGA Tour.
Unfortunately most of these games happen to take place on the weekend, a time where interruptions from the wife are vast and frequent.
College football has had to take a back seat in recent years. Not because I don’t still love to watch a great college football game but because I have had to pick my fights.
I personally enjoy watching NFL football more than college football and if I were sitting on the couch all day on Saturday and Sunday watching sports, I’d likely be picking my clothes up off the front lawn and moving into my brother’s house.
Now, my wife rarely tells me that I am unable to watch a sporting event. She is very easy going and lets me get away with a lot more than she probably should.
However, for anyone with a wife, you will know that being allowed to watch a game and being allowed to watch a game uninterrupted are two completely different things.
Sure, you could go into another room and close the door. But, a standard living room or bedroom door is no legitimate shelter from a wife trying to find you for help with the seemingly endless little projects in the house that can often make you feel as if you are rebuilding a new house with your bare hands.
Many a Sunday I have spent trying to think of a possible sanctuary within the house to watch the game in peace.
I have brought the television out to the garage and I have even gone as far as to begin to measuring in my mind whether or not the television could extend to and fit into the closet in my bedroom. The closet might at least give me a few extra minutes as she searches the house for me.
Another option that can work is to send the wife out shopping or to so some errands while your game is on.
The problem with this option, particularly in today’s economic climate, is that it can get expensive. So with this option, again, you must pick your fights.
Giants vs. Cowboys—send her out shopping with no limit.
Giants vs. Lions—is a game I’d still love to see, but is probably not worth the expense.
Fortunately recent technological advancements have provided men with a couple of other very viable options.
First there is the internet. Now, for anyone who has ever watched a game on the internet you will know that the picture quality is not great. But, watching a game in poor picture quality is well worth it if you are able to watch the game in peace.
So, how does this work?
Well I personally commute to work on a train. So, I log onto NFL.com every Monday morning, throw on my headphones and begin watching the weekend’s games while commuting.
I do the same thing every morning during the summer with MLB.com.
Not only does this allow me to watch the game in peace, it also allows me to actually enjoy a commute that used to make me feel as if I were on a cattle car heading to the meat factory.
Next, we have the greatest invention for sports fans since ESPN—DVR.
DVR allows me to record games and watch them at a later time. DVR even allows me the ability to fast-forward through those annoying commercials.
So, I normally record most games on the weekend and watch them during the week after my wife has gone to bed. Sure, this has severely cut into my sleeping time and the dark bags under my eyes have now become a permanent fixture, but it’s a small price to pay in order to sit on the couch and enjoy a football game in peace and quite.
If DVR were a MasterCard commercial it would go something like this:
“DVR monthly subscription: $11.95”
“Having the opportunity to watch sports without any interruptions: Priceless”
Marriage obviously requires sacrifices on both sides.
Unfortunately for men that sacrifice many times involves cutting back on your sport watching.
But fortunately for men, recent technological advancements have allowed us to still enjoy watching a ball game uninterrupted by the wife, albeit a roundabout way, but that is a sacrifice most are willing to make top enjoy the company of a wonderful wife as well as your other love—sports.
