Transfer Window Starting 11: Fabregas, Falcao, Aguero and More
What a close to the 2011 transfer window it was with a number of deals being secured at the last minute.
The money has been spent and contacts signed, and now it is time to see where the new signings will take their respective clubs.
From the transfers made this window, there have been a number of standouts—too many in fact. So let us take a look at the best of those transfers and compile them into one expensive, but at the same time talented squad.
Goalkeeper: Manuel Neuer
1 of 12New Club: Bayern Munich
Former Club: Schalke
Transfer Fee: €18 Million
Nationality: German
Arguably the best keeper in the world last year, Manuel Neuer guided Schalke with inspired performances to the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League.
He has now moved to German powerhouse and former rival Bayern Munich, teaming up with the likes of Ribery and Robben. With Neuer between the sticks, Bayern will prove to be a real threat in Germany and in the UEFA Champions League.
Left Back: Fabio Coentrao
2 of 12New Club: Real Madrid
Former Club: Benfica
Transfer Fee: €25 Million
Nationality: Portuguese
You know a club is rich when they replace a perfectly good left back in the form of Marcelo with a better left back.
Although perhaps Madrid signed Coentrao for his versatility, as he can also play as a central midfielder.
He will bring an extra dimension of attack for Madrid. His pace will only contribute positively to their counter-attacking football. Early signs this season would indicate that he was no one-hit wonder at Benfica.
Centre Back: Per Mertesacker
3 of 12New Club: Arsenal
Former Club: Werder Bremen
Transfer Fee: €11 Million
Nationality: German
Much has been made about Arsenal's need for a central defender, and this time, Wenger has made no mistake in bringing quality to the Arsenal defence.
Per Mertesacker is a quality signing for the Gunners.
Paired with Vermaleen at the back, the German will guide the youngsters of Arsenal around the pitch, ensuring they are well organised and disciplined.
Mertesacker is the first-choice centre back for the German International side, and his talent and leadership on the pitch will prove of great assistance to the struggling Arsenal squad.
Right Back: Davide Santon
4 of 12New Club: Newcastle United
Former Club: Inter Milan
Transfer Fee: €6 million
Nationality: Italian
Tipped to be the next "big thing" in Italy, it is fair to say that Davide Santon never really made that big of an impact at Inter.
Perhaps because the only people that could hold him out of the first team were an in-form Brazilian named Maicon and arguably one of the greatest right backs of all time, Javier Zanetti.
Although when Santon was given the opportunity to start for Inter, he made the most of it. Santon boasts pace, tactical awareness and much experience at such a young age. He will definitely be a player to watch in the English Premier League.
Newcastle grabbed him for a bargain.
Central Midfield: Nuri Sahin
5 of 12New Club: Real Madrid
Former Club: Borussia Dortmund
Transfer Fee: €10 million
Nationality: Turkish
I tip Nuri Sahin as being one of the most underrated signings of the 2011 transfer window.
Real Madrid signed the Turkish midfielder at the end of last season, and judging by his form with Borussia Dortmund, he is not one to be taken lightly.
The creative central midfielder would prove to be a perfect pairing with Xabi Alonso and could just have the flair needed to inspire Madrid to take the La Liga title. Sahin will be a useful addition to a superstar-filled Real Madrid squad.
Central Midfield: Arturo Vidal
6 of 12New Club: Juventus
Former Club: Bayern Leverkusen
Transfer Fee: €11 million
Nationality: Chilean
Juventus have somewhat of a reputation of signing flops in recent years. The Brazilians Felipe Melo and Diego were two such additions that went very wrong.
This time, Juventus have tread a bit more cautiously, deciding not to sign players for massive amounts. Rather, they have brought in experienced (such as Andrea Pirlo) and consistent performers, including Chilean Arturo Vidal.
For the last few years, he has applied his trade in the Bundesliga, succeeding in controlling the Bayer Leverkusen midfield.
He will be a force to be reckoned with in the Serie A.
Left Wing: Samir Nasri
7 of 12New Club: Manchester City
Former Club: Arsenal
Transfer Fee: €25 million
Nationality: French
Although loyalty doesn't mean much to Samir Nasri, his talent on the pitch more than answers for that trait.
In his debut performance for Manchester City, he bagged a number of assists, resembling his form early last year for Arsenal when he prolifically ripped defences to shreds.
Samir Nasri will prove to be a massive loss at the Emirates, and his creative spark, alongside that of David Silva, will be a formidable force in the English Premier League.
Attacking Midfield: Cesc Fabregas
8 of 12New Club: Barcelona
Former Club: Arsenal
Transfer Fee: €34 million
Nationality: Spanish
Fabregas to Barcelona was a deal that had been coming for a long time now. There is now doubt that since his arrival at Barcelona, Fab has been in some of his best form, scoring three times already for his youth club.
He has linked up almost perfectly with Iniesta, Xavi and Messi.
Whether it is just the excitement of joining Barcelona or just luck, Fabregas is doing something right at Barca. For his sake, let us hope he can keep up his good run of form. He, like Nasri, will be sorely missed at Arsenal.
Right Wing: Ashley Young
9 of 12New Club: Manchester United
Former Club: Aston Villa
Transfer Fee: €19m
Nationality: English
There are few things bad that can be said about Ashley Young's start to the season at Manchester United. He was the mastermind behind Arsenal's demolition and Tottenham's domination. He has been simply stunning for United, replicating the form he showed at Aston Villa.
With Nani and Valencia all capable of playing alongside Young, Manchester United look to be in really good shape this season.
Not to mention the fact that Ashley Young has already scored one of the best goals of the English Premier League season.
Striker: Sergio Aguero
10 of 12New Club: Manchester City
Former Club: Atletico Madrid
Transfer Fee: €38 million
Nationality: Argentinian
After Sergio Aguero was strongly tipped to join the likes of Juventus or Barcelona, Manchester City made a shock move for Aguero, and so far things look to have been paying off.
Aguero has already scored three goals for Manchester City in the English Premier League. Unlike others who have made the switch to the EPL, Sergio Aguero has fit in perfectly to the playing style of his new team.
Alongside Dzeko, expect to see City fly to the top of the English Premier League.
Striker: Falcao
11 of 12New Club: Atletico Madrid
Former Club: FC Porto
Transfer Fee: €40 million
Nationality: Colombian
From Aguero to his replacement at Atletico Madrid.
Falcao was prolific in the Portuguese first division last year. As a result of his stunning form, FC Porto finished undefeated in Portugal. His physique, combined with his ability to get goals, will be a useful addition for Atletico, who lost their two key forwards this transfer window.
Great form leading up to the season in the Copa America will surely come in handy in adapting to his new playing formation.
