The NBA's All-All-Around Team
There are some players who might or might not be the best at their position but who do an amazing job of filling out the stat sheet, and excelling on both ends of the ball. They score, they pass, they rebound. They shoot well. They are dependable from the charity stripe.
These are the all around players. Did you ever wonder what would happen if you put together a team like this? I got to thinking about it today, and this is what I came up with. This would be the best all-all-around team that I can come up with.
PG: Chris Paul
1 of 5PTS: 15.9
TRB: 4.1
AST: 9.8
FG%: .463
FT%: .878
Among point guards, only Chris Paul was in the top five in scoring, rebounding, assists, field goal percentage and rebound percentage, making this an easier choice that expected. He might not score like Derrick Rose, but he does score efficiently. He's also a heck of a passer, an amazing rebounder for his size, and oh yeah, All-Defense first team.
Derrick Rose set an NBA record for blocks by a point guard and was the first ever to have 600 assists and 2000 points in a season. He also surprisingly had a better field goal percentage than Deron Williams or Russell Westbrook, as well as the best free throw percentage of the three.
Russell Westbrook trailed only Rose among all point guards in total stats and led point guard in rebounding while scoring 20 points and eight rebounds. Deron Williams just missed the cut.
Second Team: Derrick Rose
Third Team: Russell Westbrook
SG: Dwyane Wade
2 of 5PTS: 25.5
TRB: 6.4
AST: 4.7
FG%: .500
FT% .758
This was a hard choice, and it came down to three players. In the end, it came down to Wade's blocking and field goal percentage. His .500 field goal percentage is pretty impressive for a guard. His numbers apart from that were very close to identical to Kobe Bryant's.
All three players are exceptional defenders, so that didn't enter much into the consideration. Igouadala had the most assists of any shooting guard, and had numbers that were solid across the line elsewhere.
Second Team: Kobe Bryant
Third Team: Andre Iguoadala
SF: LeBron James
3 of 5PTS: 26.7
TRB: 7.5
AST: 7.0
FG%:.510
FT% .759
This one really didn't take a lot of thought, nor does it take a lot of explanation. LeBron James is not only the best all around player in the game right now; he's one of the best all around players in history. Love him or hate him, you can't deny he fills a stat sheet.
Second Team: Paul Pierce
Third Team: Gerald Wallace
Keivn Durant and Luol Deng were also heavily considered. This one was a very tough call.
PF: Dirk Nowitzki
4 of 5PTS: 23.0
TRB: 7.0
AST: 2.6
FG%: .517
FT% .892
There is a difficulty in this choice. No matter who I look at, there's at least one weakness. Blake Griffin is high in everything but free throw percentage and lacks on defense. His passing ability is hugely underrated, as he's averaging 3.8 assists per game.
Kevin Garnett's scoring is down to below 15 points per game.
Dirk Nowitzki's rebounding is lacking. I ended up going with Dirk because of his incredible shooting talent. His defense has improved tremendously too, as his points per play against (.81) is better than even Kevin Garnett's.
Second Team: Kevin Garnett
Third Team: Blake Griffin
C: Al Horford
5 of 5PTS: 15.3
TRB: 9.3
AST: 3.5
FG%: .557
FT% .798
I know, you were thinking Dwight Howard, right? However, bear in mind it is the best all around team. Now think about Howard's free throw percentage. OK. That should end that argument.
Horford led NBA centers in assists. He's an outstanding defender. He is a solid shooter and scorer. He is an all around player, and I believe one of the most underrated in the league. Howard drops to number two because of the free throw percentage, but that's it.
Noah is a great rebounder, a opportunistic scorer and the only player in the league capable of playing either Dwight Howard or LeBron James one on one.
Second Team: Dwight Howard
Third Team: Joakim Noah
