4 Recently Released Players the Dallas Cowboys Should Consider Signing

Jason HenryJun 7, 2018

Remember the saying that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure? That’s usually the case with NFL players. No disrespect to any player in particular but that’s usually the way it goes.

Team A thinks that Player A is too old and he’s not worth the money anymore. Team B sees that Player A was released and believes that Player A can fill a need on their squad. Now Player A is a member of Team B so they sign him to an incentive laden contract.

The Cowboys are just like any other NFL team. When Terrell Owens left Philly and most pundits said that no team should touch him, the Cowboys did. Simply put, team owner Jerry Jones isn’t afraid to fill a team need with a free agent.

The Cowboys still have a few needs to fill and perhaps those needs can be filled by another team’s trash player.

No disrespect.

Here are four players the Cowboys should consider signing.

James Sanders, S

1 of 4

Sanders was released by the Pats on Monday and it took more than a few by surprise. Sanders was a leader on the Patriots defense and was credited with being the most effective communicator New England had.

But he was due almost $3 million this season and couldn’t shake nagging injuries.

Sanders is only in his seventh season and played well whether he was asked to start or play in a backup role. I think the Cowboys defense needs added depth and adding Sanders would bring stability and a player known for his work ethic to their defensive backfield.

Jay Alford, DT

2 of 4

Alford was drafted by the Giants in 2007 and has turned into an NFL journeyman since then. He was let go by the Seahawks today.

Alford is a 6’3” and 304 pounds. His size and ability will force teams to take a second look at him but not sure if he’ll live up to his potential.

He's also injury prone which is a huge turnoff for a lot of squads.

At any rate I think the Cowboys should give him a shot to make the 53 man roster as they’ve had some issues along the defensive line.

Nate Jones, CB

3 of 4

Jones was let go by the Broncos today after only one season with the team. He had 57 tackles last year but he had no interceptions.

Jones was with the ‘Boys from 2004 to 2007 and failed to record an interception while in Dallas as well. But with the Cowboys secondary looking shaky it wouldn’t hurt to bring a veteran back to the team who plays the position well enough to add stability and depth.

Jones isn’t a starter but he’s a respectable backup.

Anthony Gray, DT

Another defensive tackle the Cowboys should think about grabbing is Anthony Gray. He’s an undrafted rookie free agent who picked up with the Steelers but he didn’t pan out with the Steel curtain.

Gray had 38 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press at the combine so he has the necessary strength to play on the defensive line. He’s 317 pounds and probably needs a little development. Gray would come cheap and may work out to become an eventual rotational player on the defensive line.
