The Dream That Was The BCS, Is Now Officially a Nightmare

jamieson matthewsNov 17, 2008

Here we are again.  It seems that every year atabout this time, we have our annual BCS debate/debacle.  Event the new President of the United States has an opinion. Just so happens that I agree with Mr. Obama on more than the BCS, but I digress...

So who can lay claim to the right to a national title in this years mess of teams at the top? We can start with the Alabama Crimson Tide (11-0) and the Texas Tech Red Raiders(10-0).

They are both unbeaten, therefore hard to argue against either team being in the Orange Bowl at this point. The problem with those two teams seems to be the experts. Many know-it-alls on ESPN will tell you that Alabama and Texas Tech cannot, and will not, run the table and remain undefeated. Who will beat them?

That brings me to my next two teams that are still in the BCS hunt, the Florida Gators (9-1) and the Oklahoma Sooners (9-1). Both teams have looked solid this year and actually control their own destiny more than Alabama and Texas Tech. If Florida beats Alabama and Oklahoma beats Texas Tech, it will be hard to see how they don't finish in the top two spots.

Then there are the dark horses, the USC Trojans (9-1), Penn State Nittany Lions (10-1) and the Texas Longhorns (10-1). All three of these teams have looked dominant, USC and Penn State on defense, and Texas on offense.

The problem is USC lost on the road, to an Oregon State team that nobody wants to respect. Texas lost to Texas Tech on the road, to the current No. 2 team in the country. Penn State lost on the road to Iowa, a team with seven wins and is bowl eligible. There is no shame in ANY of those three loses.

Then there are the Non-BCS schools fighting for a shot. Boise State (10-0) and Utah (11-0). Both not only undefeated and under appreciated, but DEMOLISHING opponents convincing fashion nearly every time they play.

Let us not forget Ball State (10-0) is also unbeaten and unloved.

So let us play a game of what if's, shall we? What if Florida and Oklahoma beat Alabama and Texas Tech, and everone else wins out? This is what you have at the end of the regular season prior to a computer deciding which two are best suited to play for the title:

Alabama 12-1 only loss to Florida in SEC title game

Texas Tech 12-1 only loss at Oklahoma

Oklahoma 12-1 only loss to Texas

Texas 11-1 only loss at Texas Tech

Florida 12-1 only loss to Ole Miss who is bowl eligible

USC-11-1 only loss at Oregon State who might be the PAC-10 champion.

Penn State 11-1 only loss at Iowa who is bowl eligible

Utah 12-0 and Mountain West champions

Boise State 12-0 and WAC champions

Ball State 12-0 and MAC champions (this will not happen if Central Michigan does what i think they are going to do)

So what you have is seven one loss teams from major conferences and three undefeated teams from smaller conferences. And a computer is going to tell us who deserves to play for the National Title, albeit a computer with human inputs.

How is this fair? How is this justifiable?

If this were merely a one-time ordeal, I would be willing to overlook it. But this has happened in nearly EVERY single season since the BCS came to fruition. So every year we have the fans, coaches, and half the sportswriters screaming for a playoff system. On the other hand, we have the money grubbers, conference commissioners and sponsors screaming to leave it alone.

This article is only part one of my series on the BCS. I am going to examine the whys and hows of the current college football system. I am going to sling dirt and beat people to death with brutal honesty.

I am going to say things that many people might disagree with. But, oh well. If you are pissed, then chances are you are passionate. We need people who are passionate about football to make change happen. I welcome feedback and stand-by for part two of this article.
