6 Recently Released Players the New York Giants Should Consider Signing

Jeff ShullJun 7, 2018

The NFL roster cuts are officially over, and around the league several players are looking for work. Are there any players worth signing for the New York Giants?

With the recent slue of injuries to the corners, the front office will likely be paying attention to see if any worthwhile corners are available.

The Giants caught a break from Roger Goodell when he allowed them to keep five extra players than everyone else because they lost practices due to Hurricane Irene, so in the near future they might actually be focused on who to cut than who to pick up.

This list of players is by no means a prediction of players who would all of a sudden join the roster. Obviously they got cut from their teams for a reason.

Some of them are just names I recognize from covering the draft in years past, and could be worth a look for the Giants.

(If you're wondering why I chose Duke Calhoun for the photo, he was recently released by the Giants)

Malcolm Williams CB (New England)

I was surprised to see the New England Patriots cut their seventh-round pick Malcolm Williams, cornerback from TCU.

They expected him to come in and be a special teams contributor, so with the problems the Giants have had in that department, he could be worth bringing in.

Oh, and he's a corner, so that obviously helps.

Vernon Gholston DE (Chicago Bears)

Given the Giants success with defensive ends, and how much they love to have as many pass rushers as possible, they might consider giving Vernon Gholston a look-see.

But then again, maybe they won't.

Duke Robinson G (Carolina Panthers)

Now, I expect the last thing you want to see is the Giants picking up the scraps of a 3-13 team from a year ago, but Duke Robinson was highly touted coming out of college, and the Panthers offensive line is pretty set.

Robinson was a two-time All American at Oklahoma and fell to the Panthers in the fifth round—many considered him second-round talent prior to the BCS championship game in 2009.

Maybe a change of scenery is all he needs to reach his full potential.

Andre Gurode C (Dallas Cowboys)

4 of 6

This could be foolish considering the Giants just signed David Baas in the offseason, but the Cowboys have cut five-time Pro Bowl center Andre Gurode (he made it the past five seasons) and I bet the Giants are looking.

Backup center Adam Koets has been officially placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list, and Gurode is better than anybody else the Giants have at the position.

Again, this is probably just wishful thinking, as I doubt the Giants would sign Baas only to bring in more competition. However, Gurode is definitely one of the most talented players on the list of cuts, so you never know.

Kevin Dockery CB (Pittsburgh Steelers)

5 of 6

Yes Giants fans, this is the same Kevin Dockery that helped the Giants win Super Bowl XLII, and he was recently cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Given the current situation at corner, I find it difficult to believe Jerry Reese won't at least bring Dockery in for a workout.

They signed former Falcons corner Brian Williams last week, but they will explore as many options as they can to find the best replacement for Terrell Thomas, Bruce Johnson, Brian Witherspoon and Prince Amukamara (for now).

DeAndre McDaniel S (New Orleans Saints)

6 of 6

For the life of me, I can't figure out why DeAndre McDaniel went undrafted AND got cut by the Saints after he was signed as an UDFA.

We're talking about someone who, as a junior at Clemson, had 103 tackles and eight interceptions. He followed that up with 73 tackles and four interceptions as a senior.

He was also considered the No. 1 defensive back prospect in 2006 by many recruiting publications.

CBS Sports ranked him the third best safety prospect in the 2011 NFL Draft, and he was ranked the same on NFL Draft Scout's list.

The one thing I believe that held him back was his 4.67 40-yard draft time at the NFL combine. He went from third/fourth-round prospect to undrafted as a result.

There is no denying the kid had talent coming out of the draft, but I can't tell you how he'd been performing in training camp.

However, that doesn't mean he won't be looked at by several teams.
