UFC 91: Things I Realized After Watching
I was drinking a beer, OK maybe more then one, while watching UFC's titanic event; UFC 91 on Saturday night with a bunch of friends.
I was shocked after the show that Brock Lesnar had just defeated Randy "The Natural" Couture for the title; surprised not because I didn't believe in Lesnar, but simply because of how fast he did it.
I predicted Randy to win—I thought he would have exploited Lesnar's weaknesses like he has done against different opponents so many times before. Still, Brock Lesnar proved to be too much for Couture and won the championship.
But when it was all said and done, I realized several different things about the event and began to seriously thing about it.
1. It was a damn good thing the under-card fights lasted more than one round, because the event would have ended way too soon. Every fight in the main-card, but the main event ended in the very first round. It was the first time I ever saw a UFC event in which they presented the whole card in PPV because the main-card fights were not long enough.
2. Since his fight with Patrick Cote at UFC 90, Anderson Silva has been wanting to fight again soon because he wasn't satisfied with his performance. At UFC 91, Demian Maia made short work of Nate Quarry and took no damage at all. Why couldn't the UFC organize a middleweight showdown for the title between Maia and Silva at, let's say, UFC 94?
Yes it would be a packed-up event with Machida vs. Silva and GSP vs. Penn but it can be done. Well...I hope so anyways. Anderson Silva has tied the record of eight straight victories formerly held by Royce Gracie and tied by Jon Fitch. If Silva wins his next fight, he will shatter the record.
3. Dustin Hazelett is probably one of the best BJJ fighters in the UFC welterweight division, and even if he is not ready for a title shot, he should probably have a very interesting next fight—maybe against a top 10 fighter. He should definitely shave his beard like it was before. This Joe Rogan/Evan Tanner beard doesn't suit him.
4. For anybody who ever doubted Kenny Florian...what do you have to say now? He dominated a very talented fighter and made it look easy. Joe Stevenson was no match for "Kenflo" and it was surprising.
I think Kenny should get a title shot next, but with BJ fighting at UFC 94, he probably won't be fighting BJ until UFC 97 at best, which is very long without a fight. Florian will probably fight between 91 and 97, but the question is against who? Hopefully Kenny will get a little vacation and his next fight will be for the title against Penn.
5. Brock Lesnar was way too big and strong for Randy Couture. It's disappointing how fighters in that division are 220 lbs. and others are 265 lbs. The other divisions have approximately 15 lbs. separating them, so why not separate the heavyweight division in half and make a heavyweight division from 206-235 lbs., and a super heavyweight division from 236-265 lbs.
Lesnar was 45 lbs. bigger then Randy—it's not really fair. A guy who weighs 185 lbs. can't fight a guy at 170 lbs, but a 265 lbs. fighter can fight a 220 lbs. fighter? What's the problem?
Anyway, these are all things I realized after watching UFC 91, and I think it's things we have to look at. Other than that, the event was good and it pisses me off that we have to wait over a month before UFC 92.
