WWE News: 50 Matches We'd Love To See Booked Again
What if you had the chance to either go back in time and rebook a match, or better yet, become an honorary booker for a national wrestling promotion?
Are there feuds you'd like to see again? Matches and angles that should probably be redone?
Pro wrestling has given us storylines and matches that range from excellent to head-scratching. For one reason or another many of the more memorable wrestling storylines could be just as memorable, if not more so, if they were booked again.
1. Shawn Michaels vs. the Undertaker
1 of 50Shawn Michaels and the Undertaker had arguably the greatest match in WWE history at WrestleMania XXV, and duplicated that performance the following year at WrestleMania XXVI.
With Michaels retiring at the top of his game, few would be opposed to the two legends going toe to toe one more time.
2. Hulk Hogan vs. Ric Flair
2 of 50It's worth noting that this is in reference to the incomplete feud between the two in 1992. The heavily rumored (and teased) main event for that year's WrestleMania was a dream match between Flair and Hogan, but due to ego from all sides, the WrestleMania-caliber showdown did not happen.
Instead, fans were "treated" to one of the worst WrestleMania main events of all time between Sid and Hogan, while Ric Flair battled Randy Savage in a strong match that should have closed the show.
3. Kurt Angle vs. Brock Lesnar
3 of 50These two amateur wrestling stars were magic in the ring. Every time Angle and Lesnar locked horns, they were a threat to stage a classic.
With both men still being in tip top shape despite being a bit longer in the tooth these days, an Angle-Lesnar feud in 2011 could certainly draw interest.
4. Kurt Angle vs. Samoa Joe
4 of 50The greatest feud TNA ever booked was an MMA style feud between Samoa Joe and Kurt Angle at Lockdown 2008. The feud accomplished the all important task of establishing TNA as an alternative product rather than WWE-lite.
TNA needs to recapture the short-lived magic of this feud if they want any chance of obtaining a significant market share in pro wrestling.
5. Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho
5 of 50Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho undoubtedly had the feud of the year in 2008. Their angle was defined by spot-on talking segments and incredible wrestling matches, and while Michaels' retirement will likely prevent any future encounters between the two, such a feud would still be something to behold.
6. Kevin Nash vs. Goldberg
6 of 50One of the things WCW probably would do differently in hindsight was keeping Goldberg strong until they had a fresh, young challenger to beat him and keep the ball rolling for the company. Instead, an aging, power hungry Kevin Nash would act as the beneficiary when he defeated Goldberg at Starrcade in 1998.
The unproductive victory was seen as one of the final nails in WCW's coffin as the company would become its own worst enemy by not creating new stars.
7. Kevin Nash vs. Hulk Hogan
7 of 50The infamous "Fingerpoke of Doom" match between Nash and Hogan also qualifies as a match that WCW would like to have back. While Nash and Hogan certainly wasn't a contest designed to further new talent, it wasn't something that should have been given away on free pay-per-view and it certainly wasn't a finish that was going to do any favors for WCW's business.
Hogan's razor-quick, mock victory over Nash is pointed to as the straw that broke the camel's back as it pertained to WCW's fate in the Monday Night Wars.
8. Shawn Michaels vs. JBL
8 of 50The angle between John Bradshaw Layfield and Shawn Michaels was brilliantly done, and while JBL wasn't the ideal opponent for a top-flight match, Michaels did all he could to make it work.
The realistic angle of a wrestler losing all of his money in a bad economy, and being forced to sell out to an unlikable businessman, is the same type of real life booking that signifies pro wrestling at its best.
9. CM Punk vs. John Cena
9 of 50CM Punk and John Cena have amazing chemistry together, and each of their three matches against one another in the past month or so seems to have been increasingly better than its predecessor.
It appears as if WWE is going away from Cena and Punk from now, which is a shame, however many fans will surely be excited to see this contest again in the future.
10. The Undertaker vs. Triple H
10 of 50The Undertaker and Triple H pretty much saved an otherwise lackluster WrestleMania XXVII card. Triple H achieved the rare feat of having many fans believe he was actually going to defeat the Undertaker at Mania, before ultimately submitting to Taker's Hell's Gate finisher.
Triple H teased a possible rematch the following night on RAW, and if the stars align properly, this is exactly what will and should happen.
11. The Rock vs. Steve Austin
11 of 50Both the Rock and Steve Austin are still in tip top shape, and the two being placed at the top of the bill on a WrestleMania card would all but guarantee one million buys for the franchised pay-per-view.
While a Rock-Austin match would be nothing more than a stop gap for WWE, as they continue to struggle creating new stars, it sure would be fun to witness that spectacle that defined WrestleMania in the late 90's and early 2000's.
12. Shawn Michaels vs. Hulk Hogan
12 of 50It was widely believed that Shawn Michaels and Hulk Hogan were supposed to have a long feud that spanned over multiple matches, with each man getting the better of the other at least once.
However after Hulk Hogan reportedly decided he was not going to work another match with Michaels past their SummerSlam tilt in 2005, Michaels went on to make a complete mockery of their high profile match.
A proper feud would have surely been nice, as it could have been Hogan's last great series of matches with one opponent.
13. Edge vs. Christian
13 of 50WWE never took a feud between Edge and Christian seriously despite fan interest. The higher ups always viewed Christian as anything but a main eventer, and while Edge and Christian eventually competed against one another, the encounter was not advertised in advance and it happened on free TV.
Now that Edge is retired, there will never be a proper feud between these two longtime friends, but a long-term program between the two could have definitely helped WWE's struggling pay-per-view business.
14. Vince McMahon vs. Shane McMahon
14 of 50WWE put much of their resources in booking Vince McMahon's first WrestleMania match at WrestleMania XVII (X-Seven). The storyline was near perfect in portraying Vince McMahon in arguably his most demonic state.
The payoff, that saw his previously sedated wife Linda McMahon rise up and kick him in his grapefruits at Mania, elicited an emotional response that Linda could only dream of creating on the campaign trail.
Vince has definitely peaked as a demonic character, however this is the type of angle that needs to be booked in order for him to regain such a sadistic edge. Unfortunately for the Mr. McMahon character, TV-PG programming comes with many limits.
15. Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H
15 of 50Shawn Michaels arguably gave Triple H some of the best matches of his career, including an emotional encounter at SummerSlam in 2002.
Sure Michaels is retired, but you never say never in pro wrestling and if Triple H were to insist on having his last match with Shawn, it's hard to imagine Michaels being too firm about staying retired.
16. The Undertaker vs. Batista
16 of 50The Undertaker and Batista stole the show at WrestleMania 23 with a World title match that was unfairly slotted in the middle of the card.
Taker and Batista put on a great match, and their program never seemed to get the mileage it should have received.
17. John Cena vs. RVD
17 of 50The hostile environment of ECW One Night Stand in 2006 will never be duplicated, however one can always wish. Van Dam choosing to cash in his Money in the Bank contract in his home turf of ECW was arguably the most hostile environment John Cena has ever faced.
The match between Cena and RVD was more than serviceable, making RVD's first and only WWE Championship win a timeless moment.
19. Floyd Mayweather vs. the Big Show
18 of 50Floyd Mayweather is so easy to dislike it's no wonder the WWE ponied up millions of dollars to have him face the Big Show at WrestleMania XXIV.
Mayweather and Big Show put on a very good match, considering Mayweather's lack of wrestling experience, and it would be nice to see more high profile professional athletes get involved in WrestleMania feuds to further WWE's business.
18. CM Punk vs. Jeff Hardy
19 of 50It's a shame that CM Punk was made to feud with Jeff Hardy as Hardy was on his way out of the WWE, as this feud could have continued for months.
The real life animosity between the straight-edge Punk and Jeff Hardy, who has a history of troubles with drug abuse, made the feud that much better.
The feud peaked at SummerSlam in 2009, in one of the best matches in the history of the pay-per-view franchise, and the match peaked when Jeff Hardy memorably performed a Swanton Bomb from atop a 20-foot ladder.
20. Chris Jericho vs. Rey Mysterio Jr.
20 of 50These two future WWE Hall of Famers have Hall of Fame-level chemistry in the ring, and have had classic matches in multiple promotions.
Their spectacular mask match at the Bash in 2009 remains one of the better matches in WWE history, and it would certainly be nice to see these two mix it up at least one more time before each calls it a career.
21. CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio Jr.
21 of 50No matter how many times CM Punk and Rey Mysterio Jr. work together, it never seems to get old. While we have had more than our fill of this entertaining rivalry, their match at WrestleMania 26 left much to be desired as it seemed to have been cut short.
The 2010 feud almost certainly seemed to lead to a mask vs. hair match, but it was blown off when
Mysterio beat Punk in a "Hair vs. S.E.S. Pledge" match. Punk and Rey have gone on to have multiple standout matches, however their 2010 feud never seemed to reach its potential.
22. Shelton Benjamin vs. Shawn Michaels
22 of 50When WWE decided to resurrect Shelton Benjamin's career after he was cut off at the legs following a strong singles push on RAW, they paired him with Shawn Michaels.
What ensued was one of the more memorable RAW matches in recent memories, punctuated by a scintillating superkick to Benjamin who attempted a springboard maneuver.
23. Kevin Federline vs. John Cena
23 of 50Kevin Federline was a natural heel who seemed to need no WWE coaching to go out and get a reaction out of live crowds. Federline antagonized John Cena, and the usually polarizing WWE top star was universally embraced as the guy who was going to shut K-Fed up.
K-Fed's unlikeable factor made him a fantastic heel, and it was disappointing that WWE didn't use him past his short program with John Cena in 2006 and early 2007.
24. Team WWE vs. Team Nexus
24 of 50This hot 2010 angle cooled off instantaneously after John Cena's controversial "superman" act reached its height (or bottomed out depending on how you look at it).
Faced with a 2-1 disadvantage, Cena quickly recovered from a DDT on the floor to defeat Nexus members Justin Gabriel and Wade Barrett and score a victory for team WWE. The victory would act as a catalyst for the accelerated erosion of the Nexus, an erosion which many would argue was premature.
WWE likely could have gotten much more mileage out of the Nexus angle by having the Nexus go over at SummerSlam, so the decision to have the group lose makes this angle a strong candidate that many would like to see rebooked.
25. Randy Orton vs. Kofi Kingston
25 of 50WWE dropped the ball in taking Kofi Kignston to the next level during a feud with the always dangerous politician Randy Orton.
Kingston was booked brilliantly early on the strength of a Survivor Series win where Kofi was the sole survivor.
The feud quickly fizzled out thereafter as WWE booked the two in a series of matches on free TV with Orton getting the better of Kingston.
26. Randy Orton vs. the Legacy
26 of 50Randy Orton may as well lay claim to the title of star killer as well as legend killer. Any good that came out of the Legacy stable was undone following his unceremonious victory over his former stable members at WrestleMania XXVI.
Following the split of DiBiase and Rhodes from Orton, both Rhodes and DiBiase found tough sledding regaining ground as stars on the rise. Rhodes has had a better go of it in recent months, with DiBiase still in rehab mode.
27. Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart
27 of 50The two just filmed a rivalry themed DVD where both sat down and gave candid interviews on their very real rivalry of the late 90's.
Sure Bret can't go anymore, but had he (hypothetically) stuck around after the Montreal Screwjob, a follow up match would be as juicy as they get.
28. Kevin Nash vs. the Big Show
28 of 50WWE teased this battle of the big men at the Royal Rumble last year, and it would certainly be something for the Big Show to do as it almost always seems that Creative has nothing for Show come WrestleMania season.
Nash and Show battled in WCW back when Show was known as "The Giant,"with Nash almost breaking Show's neck following a botched Jacknife.
29. Mick Foley vs. the Undertaker
29 of 50This is a possible match that has been discussed for what will likely be the Undertaker's final match at WrestleMania XXVIII.
Foley has been losing weight just in case he is called upon by the fed to get back in the ring. Mick Foley is one of the Undertaker's greatest opponents, and a feud between the two would write itself.
30. Chris Jericho vs. CM Punk
30 of 50Jericho and CM Punk have never had a full fledged feud but they have mixed it up in the ring before. The result, in the semi-finals at the King of the Ring tournament in 2008, was not as pretty as it should have been which necessitates the call for a rematch.
Jericho teased a possible feud with Punk on Twitter after Punk mentioned his name on air. A fresh feud between the two would sure be fun.
31. The Ultimate Warrior vs. Hulk Hogan
31 of 50The Ultimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan have had two high profile matches with each man claiming a victory. Given the real life problems between the two that have ensued, there is some money in a rubber match between Warrior and Hogan.
TNA loves booking angles close to home, so maybe Russo and co. should get on it.
32. Tirple H vs. Mick Foley
32 of 50Triple H and Mick Foley had a very physical blood feud back in the Attitude Era that helped get Triple H over as a legitimate WWE Champion and bona fide star.
Both men still have something left in the tank, and it wouldn't be out of the question to see this match again.
33. NFL vs. WWE Battle Royal
33 of 50The WWF and the NFL had a battle Royal back at WrestleMania II, however given how far the NFL has come today, the possibility of a rematch is slim to none.
With the NFL's popularity in this day and age, there would be a lot of fan interest in another NFL vs. WWE match with noted NFL wrestling fans James Laurinaitis, Ben Roethlisberger and Clay Matthews Jr. in the mix.
34. Steve Austin vs. Vince McMahon
34 of 50Steve Austin and Vince McMahon had their share of battles, but never at WrestleMania which could have been truly epic.
McMahon has shown the propensity to rise to the occasion and put on a serviceable match when necessary, and a WrestleMania match featuring one of the greatest rivalries in WWE history would be no exception.
35. Shawn Michaels vs. Vince McMahon
35 of 50Shawn Micheals and Vince McMahon had a very good match at WrestleMania XXII that was arguably the best on the card.
While both Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels seem to have sworn off of wrestling, this is a feud that was well done from start to finish and would make for a great return feud.
36. Chris Jericho vs. Dean Malenko
36 of 50Chris Jericho became a star by his own doing in WCW. Much of his stardom was attributed to an entertaining angle with Dean Malenko. The WCW cruiserweights were always known for their wrestling more than their personalities. Chris Jericho had both, and used his colorful personality and showmanship to act as a heel foil for the more straight laced Dean Malenko.
The two had a feud that was entertaining both in and out of the ring, and with both under the WWE umbrella if and when Jericho returns, a brief one-off feud could be intriguing for old time's sake.
37. Matt Hardy vs. Edge
37 of 50If Matt Hardy wasn't off on an island somewhere watching his life disinegrate, and if Edge was healthy enough to still go, WWE would probably want another shot at booking what should have been a long-term feud between Edge and Hardy.
Their very personal feud in 2005, inspired by real life issues, didn't quite pan out the way it was supposed to, but it helped make Edge into a bona fide star while Hardy was cast off to the side.
38. Shawn Michaels vs. Kurt Angle
38 of 50Shawn Michaels and Kurt Angle had one of the great matches in the history of the WrestleMania franchise at WrestleMania XXI.
Michaels and Angle always worked well together and could still put on a a great match if it wasn't for the fact that Michaels is retired and Angle is in TNA.
39. Randy Orton vs. Christian
39 of 50Randy Orton and Christian is one of the rare feuds on this list that seems like we will get to see again as Christian and Orton get set to do battle on Tuesday's live SmackDown special.
Despite the amount of times these two individuals have squared off, they always seem to put on unique and entertaining matches that have yet to grow stale.
40. Chris Jericho vs. Ricky Steamboat
40 of 50Chris Jericho and Ricky Steamboat's rivalry in 2008 showed that Ricky Steamboat can still wrestle, despite career-ending back problems. In fact, Jericho felt that Steamboat was a better worker than 80 percent of the WWE roster, and he may have been right.
Following Jericho's WrestleMania XXV win in a handicap match, the two followed up with a one on one contest at Backlash that was good but not great. Another match, and the subsequent continuation of that feud would have certainly been in order.
41. Triple H vs. John Cena
41 of 50John Cena and Triple H met at WrestleMania XXII in a highly entertaining match that served as one of the first hostile environments that John Cena faced.
Cena went over in that match, and Triple H would go on to get his revenge at WWE Night of Champions in 2008. The two have gone on to have good matches on free TV, but another high profile pay-per-view showdown between the two could inject life into a buyrate.
42. Tables, Ladders and Chairs
42 of 50Following the breathtaking TLC matches during the hay day of the WWE tag team division, most subsequent matches of this variety have been held in singles capacities.
With WWE currently focused on revamping their tag team division, a TLC match between two or three tag teams would be a nice treat for the fans, especially if it involved high-flying tag team champions Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne.
43. Shawn Michaels vs. Steve Austin
43 of 50WrestleMania XIV signaled the changing of the guard as Austin defeated Shawn Michaels for the WWF Championship. Despite nagging back problems that were thought to be career ending, Shawn Michaels fought through his injury and put on a capable match against Austin.
This match would have been much better (if not a match of the year candidate), had Michaels' back been 100 percent, and it is still a match that can at least be negotiated under the WWE umbrella.
44. Randy Orton vs. CM Punk
44 of 50Orton and Punk's recent feud lead to a very good match at WrestleMania XXVII, but there was always a feeling that something was missing.
With Punk being taken a bit more seriously these days, a feud between Orton and Punk would be much more intriguing.
45. Zack Ryder vs. Santino Marella
45 of 50Ryder and Marella were scheduled to face off this past week on RAW, in a battle of two of WWE's more popular comedy acts.
Instead, the Miz and R-Truth attacked Marella and declared their intentions to put an end to the company-wide conspiracy.
It would have been interesting to see who would have won in a match of comedic supremacy, and the match itself could have been worth a laugh or two.
46. Gail Kim vs. Awesome Kong
46 of 50Gail Kim and Awesome Kong looks like it won't happen anytime soon with Kim whining her way out of the WWE and Kia Stevens opting to get pregnant in the always dangerous profession of pro wrestling.
A rematch between the two, who showed great chemistry in TNA, could be a "bad career decisions on a pole" match.
47. Samoa Joe vs. A.J. Styles vs. Christopher Daniels
47 of 50These three lit up the ring every time they stepped into it for triple threat warfare, and it has been a while since we have seen them go at it.
If TNA ever decided to take its homegrown talent seriously, another triple threat match between Joe, Styles and Daniels would be in order.
48. Trish Stratus vs. Mickie James
48 of 50Trish Stratus pretty much made Mickie James, and now that James is one of the top female workers in wrestling, a match between both women could breathe life into women's wrestling all while making Diva-dirt climax instead of complain.
49. John Cena vs. Sheamus
49 of 50John Cena was supposed to make Sheamus, but a lack of definitive victories for Sheamus turned his WWE Championship reigns into abject farces.
With Sheamus slowly living up to his immense potential these days, a clean win over John Cena would be more than enough to establish the Celtic Warrior as a star.
50. Chris Jericho vs. Randy Orton
50 of 50Randy Orton was the man responsible for (storyline) removing Chris Jericho from the WWE storylines after one of his deadly punts to the head.
If Jericho ever returns to the Fed, a feud with Orton would make perfect sense.
