ACC: A Jumbled Mess Within
The Atlantic Coast Conference is certainly the most interesting league in 2008. Though college football is always spontaneous and filled with surprises, the ACC has no surprise teams or wins this season. Instead, the entire conference is shocking with nine contenders and no one that wants to step up and claim it.
Maryland
The Terrapins gave themselves a leg up in the ACC with a win over North Carolina 17-15. To this point, Maryland does not like the state of Virginia, as they have lost to both Virginia Tech and Virginia. Coach Friedgen has his team in the driver’s seat, but can they close out their last two games against Florida State and Boston College?
Florida State
The Seminoles would have helped its position tremendously with a win over Boston College, but apparently the Eagles had a different idea. The Seminoles lose at home 27-17 to Boston College with only Maryland left in the ACC schedule. Florida State currently has a 4-3 record in the ACC.
Boston College
The Eagles helped its cause Saturday night with a win on the road at Tallahassee. Boston College currently sits at 3-3 in the conference with two remaining ACC teams to play, in Wake Forest and Maryland. A demoralizing loss against the struggling Clemson Tigers has put the Eagles in the dicey mix of the ACC.
Wake Forest
It seemed the Demon Deacons had it figured out this week. Let’s win this easy match-up against this poor N.C. State opponent, then go on to win big against Boston College. But look out; They forgot to beat the Wolfpack first.
The N.C. State Wolfpack made the route to the ACC Title even trickier for Wake Forest, as they knocked them off 21-17 on Saturday. Wake Forest currently sits at 4-3 in the conference with Boston College left in the ACC.
Miami
The Hurricanes momentarily have a slight edge in the Coastal Division with a 4-2 win-loss record. However, they still have two formidable opponents standing in their way. The Hurricanes have to go on the road to Georgia Tech and North Carolina State to end the season.
Georgia Tech
The Yellow Jackets can stay right in the mix with a big win over Miami on Saturday. Georgia Tech currently sits at 4-3 in-conference with only one ACC game remaining. It has been a great start for Coach Paul Johnson, but can they finish strong?
North Carolina
The Tar Heels have had an impressive season with their only losses coming against Virginia Tech by three, Virginia by three in overtime, and Maryland by two points. North Carolina currently sits at 3-3 in conference with two very winnable games remaining against N.C. State and Duke to finish the season.
Virginia Tech
The Hokies have lost three of their last four ACC games, but this is no time to give up. Virginia Tech is still in the running with a 3-3 conference record and two final games against Duke and Virginia at home.
Virginia
After getting blasted at home in their season opener against USC 52-7, the Cavaliers have rebounded and stood strong in the ACC. Virginia currently sits at 3-3 in conference with remaining games against Clemson and at Virginia Tech.
The Cavaliers have lost some luster as they have lost their last two ACC games against Miami and Wake Forest. Time for a late surge, perhaps?
