WCW Part One: Intro
WCW was a pro wrestling company that existed from 1988 until 2001. Now pro wrestling has had many promotions some have been successful while others have perished, but what makes WCW special is that they were the only wrestling promotion ever to outsell and out preform the WWE.
No promotion has come close to replicating what WCW has done, they had not only the most watched wrestling show on cable, they had one of the most watched shows on cable this was because they produced the best shows and were doing angles that wrestling has never seen including things such as the nWo and introduced new forms of wrestling such as the crusierweights and brought in great technical wrestlers.
In addition to this they had a roster packed full of the greatest stars in wrestling they had the biggest names of the 80's Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage. They had the biggest stars on the 90's DDP, Bret Hart, Sting,Lex Luger and Goldberg, they had great tag teams such as the Steiners, Harlem Heat and Public Enemy.
They also brought in the likes of Kevin Nash and Scott Hall who played a major part in the nWo, and that's not in they even brought in the best and most exciting wrestlers from around the world including Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, Eddie Guerrero, Chris Jericho, Rey Mysterio, and of course how can you forget the Shockmaster, they also had Eric Bischoff the only man who's come close to putting Mr. McMahon out of the business running the show.
In addition to having the best TV and the best roster they had Ted Turner one of the most richest men in the media overseeing the operation and provided WCW with all the resources that they needed to succeed.
WCW had everything they needed to be the number one promotion in the world but with all their advantages they were also disadvantages, even though Ted Turner owned WCW many people within the company were trying to rid of WCW.
Since Ted Turner brought in many meetings the issue of selling WCW came up numerous times until Ted Turner explained that wrestling was a big reason why his TV stations become successful and he does not want the issue of WCW being sold being raised in meeting again.
This was simply because they did not understand wrestling and how lucrative the business can become, they also thought wrestling was only watched by unintelligent people who are low lifes and have nothing better to do then to watch men fight in their underpants and had no place in the company.
In 1998, as Ted Turner lost more control of his empire more restrictions were placed on WCW and basically all the edgy content they were putting on was no longer allowed to be put on the air so basically WCW was told to go backwards to a more family friendly.
Also WCW become so successful that they forget who they were dealing with as in terms of competition the WWF, the WWF reacted to what WCW were doing and started putting on more edgier content and eventually started to produce better TV then WCW, and WCW had so many internal problems that they failed to react.
In the next article I will discuss how the war between WWF and WCW actually started.
