Yankees Reportedly Interested in Peavy

Frankie RioloNov 15, 2008

After talks with the Braves regarding Peavy fell through yesterday, reports have surfaced about the Yankees being interested in making a move to put the San Diego ace in pinstripes today.

Padres GM Kevin Towers and Yankees GM Brian Cashman had reportedly touched upon the possibility of a trade during the general managers' meetings a couple of weeks ago.

However, Towers informed Cashman that the Padres were planning to explore all of their National League options first, with the Braves and Cubs appearing to be the favorites at the time.

Since then, the Cubs have decided to focus much of their efforts on resigning starting pitcher Ryan Dempster, while a potential deal with the Atlanta Braves seems to be officially dead.

Enter the New York Yankees.

According to Fox Sports, the clubs have already been talking. It would not be unreasonable to believe that a spot in the rotation could belong to Peavy come April.

Conversely, a few issues may arise when it comes to bringing the 2007 NL Cy Young Winner to the Bronx.

First, Peavy holds a no-trade clause with the Padres and has expressed his desire to pitch in the National League, although there is a possibility he could waive it.

Secondly, he has had some history of being injured. It would be quite a punch to the gut for the Yanks if they had to deal with another Carl Pavano-type tenure.

Many fans have also pointed out that Peavy's success in the National League may not translate over to the American League. His 2008 season record was 10-11; however, it must be mentioned that he played on a disaster of a team. Peavy still carried a very impressive 2.85 ERA.

I, for one, would have absolutely no problem seeing Peavy on the mound in the new Yankee Stadium.

The team cannot be concerned with "what ifs" and miss out on a golden opportunity (ala Johan Santana).

My only chief concern would be the players that the Yanks would have to give up. I would draw the line at star minor leaguer Austin Jackson, but would give up a multitude of other players, including Melky Cabrera or even Robinson Cano.

In addition, Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy are more than expendable at this point. Unfortunately, the Padres are certainly way more than aware of the failures of the two young pitchers this past season.

In other news: Nothing new on the Sabathia front, but the watch is on! Derek Lowe and A.J. Burnett still remain offer-less, as well (from the Yanks, at least).
