Checking on the Phillies Hot Stove

Kevin McGuireNov 13, 2008

So the Phillies are still World Champions, but what have they been doing to build the next championship squad?

Let's start with the guys who have filed for free agency.

Pat Burrell

Obviously Burrell is the guy everyone will be watching. Some say he is fit for an American League designated hitter but Burrell still wants to play in the field. Not exactly a Gold Glove caliber fielder, Burrell sometimes gets a bad rap just for his speed.

I am starting to think that the post-Burrell era is about to begin. What helps the chances of Burrell returning is the move the Rockies and A's made, sending Matt Holliday to Oakland and eliminating the Phillies from those trade rumors. If the Phillies are still planning on having Holliday in left field in 2010 then signing Burrell likely comes off the table. There is no way they would want both of those contracts on the same payroll.

Jamie Moyer

It seems as though the Phillies are waiting to see what kind of offers the crafty lefty receives on the open market. They are interested in signing him but reaching an agreement on the number of years may be the main issue as far as Moyer is concerned. I don't anticipate him winning 16 games in 2009 on any team, but I would certainly take a flyer on the guy. All he does is mess with hitters and keep you in the game.

Scott Eyre

Signed a one year deal on Monday for $2 million. That is a good deal by the Phillies. Eyre may have gotten off to a rocky start but quickly asserted himself as a solid lefty out of the bullpen.

Tom Gordon

The Phillies cut ties with the aging and often injured Gordon with a contract buyout. Godon is a class guy though so there are no hard feelings with his departure. He gave his best effort but just could not stay healthy. I wish him the best of luck with a future playing job or retirement, whichever he decides on.

So what is the primary focus for the front office this off season? What happens with Burrell will ultimately paint the picture. Should Burrell leave, then the Phillies must pick up an outfielder.

Do you move Shane Victorino right and attempt to bring in Mike Cameron? Do you keep Victorino in center, where he just won a Gold Glove, and make an offer for Magglio Ordonez, a move I would be perfectly fine with. Don't hold your breath for Manny Ramirez.

As for pitching, what needs improvement? Cole Hamels and Brett Myers will be your 1-2 punch, and Moyer would be a solid No. 3 once again. After that the Phillies have Joe Blanton and maybe Kyle Kendrick. Who knows what will happen with Kendrick?

Blanton's name could easily be used in trade discussions as well and after his post season he might be able to bring you more than he used to. Whatever the case may be 2009 may be the year for the grand debut of Carlos Carrasco. He has been tearing up the minor leagues. Watch him in spring training. He could make the short list to head to Philadelphia.

Really the Phillies do not have many moves that need to be made. If Burrell leaves that frees up some space with the salary, but many players will be receiving new deals and raises before next season starts. Hamels is set for a pay day (well-deserved) and Ryan Howard will once again be up for arbitration.

What moves do you think need be made?
