Jets-Patriots:Gang Green Leaves On a Brett Plane With First Place

Sergei MiledinNov 14, 2008

Well Jets fans, here it is, your moment of zen.

After much praying and nail-biting the New York Jets beat the New England Patriots 34-31 to stand alone in first place in the AFC East.

After winning their ninth consecutive coin-toss, the Jets, like they had done in the previous four games, found a way to score on their opening drive.

In 10 plays Brett Favre connected with five different players, resulting in a seven yard connection to Leon Washington to put the team up 7-0. It was the first time the Patriots allowed a touchdown in an opening drive this season. Matt Cassel led his team down-field in rebuttal only to settle for a field goal.

The Jets replied with one of their own after Dustin Keller dropped a sure TD in the end-zone, forcing the kicking unit onto the field.

The field goal theme continued with another Gostkowski kick, this one good for 31 yards to make the score 10-6 early in the second quarter.

The resulting kickoff ended up in the hands of Washington who hadn't returned a kick all season. That changed quickly when he broke through the gaps created by his teammates for a 92-yard return, making it 17-6.

Cassel couldn't get much done in the drive that followed, giving the ball back to the Jets.

Favre connected with Jerricho Cotchery throughout the following drive, including a 46 yard pass that was caught with one hand by the falling Cotchery.

They connected again two plays later for a 15-yard TD making the score 24-6 with time running down in the half.

Both teams got nothing done in their next drives and the Patriots got the ball back with under two minutes to go. Cassel led the Pats down the field and connected with Jabar Gaffney on a 19-yard score to make it 24-13.

Out of the gate, the Jets seemed to be on top of their game after recovering a Benjamin Watson fumble. However, nothing would result from the turnover as the Jets went three and out. The Patriots were the next to score with 2:25 left when Cassel found Watson on a 10-yard TD, 24-21.

The Pats clawed their way back after a Cotchery fumble recovered by Gary Guyton. It  set-up another Gostkowski FG for 47-yards, giving Jets fans near and far the same old "here we ago again" feeling.

Favre led his team downfield on their last drive, eating up 7:08 of the clock. Thomas Jones found the endzone to put the team up 31-24, avenging the infamous three and out on the goal line in week two at home.

However, when it seemed the Jets had finally put the Patriots to bed the improbable happened: Cassel, in a Brady-esque fashion, heroically led his team down the field to tie the game. Big receptions in big spots allowed Cassel to do his best Favre scramble impression as he found Randy Moss in the endzone with one second left in the game.

The officials reviewed the call, double-checking if Moss's right foot touched the ground, which it clearly did—with the help of Ty Law falling on top of him. The Jets faces said it all, while Favre had the worst face of them all; but it would be his perseverance that leads his team in overtime.

After winning the coin toss again, the Jets faced a 3rd-and-15 when Favre connected with his favorite target, Keller, for a 16-yard gain. He utilized both Keller and Laveranues Coles masterfully to march New York down the field while the Patriots, and fans lucky enough to be watching, witnessed another classic Favre game-winning drive.

It came down to Jay Feely; he lined up the 34-yard attempt and squeezed it through the uprights, sending Jets fans and players into pandemonium. The biggest win of the season thus far, this is only the Jets second win of 13 games over their bitter rivals, and the first time they had sole possession of first place since Nov. 19, 2001.

The Good or should I say amazing:The Jets have avenged their loss from week two and find themselves to be one of the hottest teams in the NFL. The fact it's over the Patriots only makes it sweeter.

The Bad:Allowing Cassel to constantly scramble for big gains should be something the defense looks over as they prepare for the undefeated Titans.

The Ugly: Moss's TD catch where Mangini decided to go for single coverage resulted in one of the bigger gaffes this season.

Game Ball: Tonight was the reason the Jets got the services of Brett Favre as he was 26-33 for 258 yards, two TD's and NO INTERCEPTIONS.
